Smith & Wesson made the Model 916 here in the United States. When it became a large failure due to quality problems it was dropped in 1972. Smith & Wesson then contracted Howa Industries in Japan to make the Model 3000 pump shotgun and the Model 1000 semi-auto shotgun. Those models were built with the intention to displace Remington from the law enforcement market. The Model 3000 was a Remington 870 clone well built but 870 accessories did not interchange with the 3000. When Smith & Wesson was not able to displace Remington the project was dropped. So ended S&W move to make shotguns.
