Tranquilizing is something that requires the perfect dosage amoung to work. Too much, and you could kill someone. Too little, and it'll take too long to work, or not work at all.
That's why at the zoo the animal control tranq. guns have the proper dosage needed to take down a lion or tiger if it escapes, but if you shot someone with it by accident, you'd likely stop their heart.
Now try to enjoy that scene from Old School when you realize he'd have died in that pool. (If you hate Will Ferrell then that works even better)
