I thought it was funny they sold me .22, the most commonly used round in pistols in the nation, but not 357. Oh well drifted the sights on my savage and now its a nail driver.

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense. Everyone knows there are plenty of carbines that shoot pistol ammo. But I have had to show my ID every time I bought 9mm at Dick's Sporting Goods, and I assumed they were trying to verify I was 21 (because I'm pretty sure I don't look young enough that anyone would think I'm under 18.
) I don't remember if there's a law against selling pistol ammo to people under 21.If you have friends who are over 21, best thing to do is ask them to come with you. Or just ask somebody you know to grab you some .357 the next time they happen to be in Cabela's.

They tried to pass it as "Law" instead of "store policy."
Law says its defined by the firearm you shoot it in, story policy is that a 19 year old girl is the end all expert on federal law.

Its not a straw purchase, since I can legally get the ammo no problem. Lets say your going plinking with a 22 and say to a friend "pick up a box for me ill pay ya back." its no problem, if you want them to get you 9mm to shoot in a xd or something, then that is.
I had legal right to buy the ammo. Ill try again soon and raise hell if I cant get it, or try and buy at gun counter itself where they know what the hell their talking about (and keep the records of sale if it comes to it.)

Yeah, buying ammo for somebody to use in a firearm that they own and operate legally is not a "straw purchase". As k9870 has said, the reason that retail chains won't sell pistol ammo to anyone under 21 isn't because of the law, it's because of store policy.
(This is at the federal level, of course; I'm sure individual states have their own laws.)
