Sorry, I've got a strong opinion about that.
My grandfather (a WWII vet) calls it a Colt .45 or just a .45. Which, I guess, was because it was easier to say than "Nineteen-Eleven" (too many syllables). But anyway, the Colt 1911 was the only Colt .45-caliber pistol that they were issued, so if you said Colt .45, anyone knew what you were talking about.

But again, that just applies to his generation.
