Eliciting comments from the membership allows people to give coherent and interesting counterpoints. Well at least that's the way it's supposed to work. If everyone seems to be in agreement, then we or I or whoever, can go ahead and be proactive, aware that we gave others the chance to give their input.
Personally I feel better when people give their opinions. It clarifies one's position and strengthens it. If someone comes up with a good and compelling counter argument then it gives us the chance to do some deep consideration before acting.
But you're right. Complete democracy doesn't work on a site like this. If we some day get bombarded with 12 year olds, they STILL cannot take over the site via 'tyranny of the majority'. We still have the 'old guard' to keep them at bay
