Dillinger's .38 Super pistol was very cool, it was like a mini-Thompson.

It's the 1911 with the Cutts compensator, Thompson foregrip, and extended magazine. Obviously it was full auto. Neat piece. Some of the other crew's guns are pretty cool too.

The .38 Super was actually designed to penetrate body armor - when WW1 surplus body armor first started appearing, they did tests found the only handgun cartridge on the market that would penetrate it was the old .38 ACP used in the 1902 Military / Sporting and 1903 Pocket Hammer pistols. So they loaded it to higher pressure just to be sure, called it the .38 Super and chambered it in a 1911 type pistol.

While because of it's impressive ballistics the .38 Super does have good inherent accuracy, that was never used to its full potential until the 80s. It was meant, like the .38ACP, to headspace on the tiny little semi-rim, which never really worked and the 1911 isn't designed that way. When they started headspacing off the case mouth it improved dramatically.

Wow, that is an epic collection.
The foregrip may look kind of wack on that 1911, but it's still pretty cool.

Mann knows his shit, so don't be surprised if he wrote a conversation about the 38 super penetrating body armor into the film somewhere.

I wish he'd still use sound like in Heat. Deafening gunfights are realistic, and if he can't do it because wusses have to plug their ears in the movie theater, too bad! Like Collateral had a hint of it, but Miami Vice (06) has pretty poor gunfire.

BTW, those are the only three Mann directed movies I've seen, so that's why I reference them so much.
