I've never tried it, muzzle flash is always a concern. The first guy has a jacket, so he's protected. In the second pic his support hand is on the forend so he's okay. It probably steadies the shot some.

I imagine it only helps if your elbow is braced against something solid like in the first picture. On a slightly related note, I have seen something recently where someone stabbed a knife into a tree to use as a hasty rest but can't remember what it was, can anyone help me out? Think it was a Blaser R93.

If he had sites on the weapon, ,that would probably be a big help too.
