And then sold it to buy one of the 12 remaining PT boats for $1,000,000.

I moved it to a new thread.

I'm a bit surprised that they're scrapping the Forrestal. After the debacle that was scrapping the Coral Sea, I thought the navy would dispose of their carriers in other ways (America was expended in a live-fire exercise.). It'll be interesting to see if it could be done.

Other countries send their carriers overseas to be scrapped (like the Invincible or the Melbourne,) but apparently it's against the law to send capital ships overseas for scrapping. (A few of the last remaining Essex-class carriers were sent overseas for scrapping, but I guess you could argue they were obsolete at the time and that no one would try to copy the design.)

Yeah, I always sort of think that the big conventional carries should just be expeneded in a SINKEX

I have a better idea: Sell it to the Chinese, then watch as they try in vain to make it functional and convince the world that they have a respectable Navy with carriers that don't even have catapults. Then watch as they try and get their J-15 "Flopping Fish"...errr, Flying Shark, to take off and land on the carrier without being able to carry a sufficient weapons/fuel load.

And I'm dead serious. We'd make a lot more money, and get entertainment value that would undoubtedly inspire some quality Onion and Duffel Blog articles.

State-run media criticizing anything about the state? Sounds like an attempt at misinformation to me.

"The state" in the PRC isn't some monolithic entity just because everyone is under the same ideology. There are competing power factions and bureaucratic rivalries, same as anywhere else.

What is happening here is that one of those factions is angry at another (the military) for hurting rather than boosting national pride, which is the PLA's main role nowadays (fighting wars against the Anglos, Indians, and Japanese is of secondary importance...and it's a pretty distant second).
