5.56 Optimised
Anyone familiar with this new type of ammo, the "brown tip", being issued by USSOCOM? Info on the web is pretty sketchy (as is a lot of things regarding our venerable Shadow Warriors), but from what I've read on a number of forums, it's a new 5.56x45mm cartridge with a projectile that's solid copper and that SOF have (supposedly) been getting particularly good results with it.

Excellent news that deadlier ammo has been cleared for use (never mind that we've been obeying "laws of war" that our enemies have no intention of obeying and that we never actually signed said treaty to obey, but whatever...), but according to that article, SOST ammunition has a lead core, but according to Defense Review, the USSOCOM ammo is solid copper all the way through (apparently SOCOM wants to go green---no pun intended).

Bout time. Some of the Marines I've talked to mentioned others, not necessarily them, using more powerful ammo already

So, what's it do?
The article mentions it stays on target better after hitting barriers, and that it is able to fragment quicker. Also, it has reduced muzzle flash. How does it achieve these things? |
