Just got my new shotgun

Mossberg is the only one of the big 3 (Winchester, Remington, Mossberg) that makes a decent factory pistol grip. As far as I know Remington doesn't make one at all, and Winchester's 1300 Pistol grip has a big gap between the grip and the trigger guard, which I'm not thrilled about. I suggest highly that you go factory, in fact, I'm surprised it didn't come with both a stock and a factory pistol grip, as some Mossberg guns are shipped and sold with both.

As for me, my options aren't fantastic. I'm not a fan of most aftermarkets, so I'll post likely get the Tac-Star Tommy Gun style one, but I'm also saving up for other things, gun related and non, so it'll be a while before I get toys for my toys. For now I like the full stock as it allows me to aim rather than just fire and forget, but a pistol grip would be fun for practice and recreation.

The Mariner apparently doesn't come with it as standard. I do remember being told while looking over some of the standard black models that those do get sold with the pistol grip. But yes, I will most definitely go factory.

Pistol grips aren't really all that practical (I certainly expect I'll be using the stock a lot more), but they do look nice and make storage a bit easier. It's something that'd be nice to have.

My department recently added new synthetic stocks with integral pistol grips onto our Remington 870's. It's very nice. Qualification scores went up immediately. Also added "assault" slings which makes things easier as well.

Try standing around for a couple hours with a shotgun. It gets heavy after awhile, but you can't set it down or throw it up on your shoulder. That's just what the news media would like to see. A police officer handling his shotgun like he's some sort of idiot. That picture would get into the newspaper.

The sling not only frees up your hands and gives your arms a rest, but it makes you look really tactical-cool. And that's important also.

At this point, I think the PRC and DPRK have moved so far from Marxist ideology that their proper label is just "ultra-nationalist", even if they still call themselves "socialist".

But anyway, the only threat I worry about is the Latino gangs who are scattered throughout this area. I think the sound that my Mossberg makes when cocked ought to put the fear of Jesucristo into them.

Seconded. I live in a less credible area of town (as well as within a quarter mile of the state penitentiary) so a shotgun brings a lot to the table, and can take a lot off the table as well.

I still think, though, that in all practicality, not factoring in intimidation, that the handgun is the best means of home defense. In a close environment, a shotgun is a bit bulky, low capacity, and LOUD to be using in your own house, not to mention the collateral damage it could cause should you have to shoot it. With a shotgun, I believe that if you can't deter someone by saying "I've got a shotgun, you better leave" or that monstrous racking sound, it's not worth it.

Still, they are fun guns and convenient to have should something more than a petty thief threaten your life, but any long gun should be supplemented with a decent sidearm, especially a shotgun. MT2008 has himself a good, shiny shotgun and an excellent pistol, so he's in good hands.

Finally, as a zombie and gun enthusiast, a shotgun actually isn't the best weapon to have for fighting hordes of the undead, although it's not low tier either. The slow reload time alone is enough to drop it's rank substantially, not to mention that most shotguns can't hold more than 9 rounds and aren't useful past traditional pistol ranges. The only reason it's balanced out is by it's ability to accept raw ammunition without the need for magazines, shoot spreads instead of one single round at a time, and the fact that said spreads can cause massive damage to a head or even a zombie's center mass, rendering it at the very least incapacitated. Still, if you think it's going to be your only primary weapon, you'd better be running with a decent group, armed with other weapons like rifles, or be a masterful reloader and shooter of a tactical shotgun.

The SIG P226 will always be my nightstand gun, the one that I reach for if somebody's broken into my place (not very likely). The Mossberg is what I'll use if I hear somebody breaking into my car outside, or if there's some kind of disruption outside that is best broken up by the sound of a 12-gauge being cocked.

Isnt there some kind of law that says they have to be in your house in order for you to confront them with a weapon/and or shoot them.

You can confront anyone in order to defened others or your property.

BTW, dont rely on racking a shotty to scare off intruders, it just tells them where you are. Most SD experts recommend not doing so.
