Default My son is now in the Coast Guard.

Well it's official. Our son Marcus was sworn into the U.S. Coast Guard this morning. He ships out for recruit training at the Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May, New Jersey on the 29th of August. His mother and I are very proud of him. This is something that he wanted and he's done it on his own without having to be poked and prodded by us. After the ceremony his recruiter told us that when he first met Marcus several months ago there were many kids in the group and Marcus is the only one to have followed through. He graduates from high school this May and he doesn't feel ready for college just yet. He wants to get out of Idaho and see some of the world and earn his own keep. He figures the Coast Guard is the way to do it. As I said we're very proud of him.

Congrats! One of my coworkers was in the Coast Guard for twenty years and made Chief. He spent a lot of time stationed out of Kodiak Island, working on buoy tenders.

Marcus is looking at aviation. The coast guard has both helicopters and fixed wing aircraft.

This reminded me of this article from last year.

That's awesome Cordell. Glad he's moving forward and growing to be a man and productive member of society.

Thanks. He was in a rough patch a year ago, but he's come a long ways in just fourteen months. Things happen quickly during the teen years.

Thanks. I hope he makes the most out of his enlistment. Who knows he might even decide to stay in for a career. But whatever he chooses I think he's getting off to a good start.

Congratulations, I'm sure you're very proud!

It's an old joke in the Forces here that the Army is full of Newfies and the Navy is full of prairie boys - I guess it holds true down South too.
