Mostly, to save face on the loss of the XM29/OICW. That and the fact that the U.S. military tends to like stuff that they can call "all theirs" (developed for them, not somebody else).

I recall reading somewhere that the US Army actually did test the G36, but it failed several crucial safety reviews.

But don't quote me there as it was quite a while back.
