Well, as I mentioned earlier, it's not like Tom Clancy's novels (even his "classics", like The Hunt for Red October) have ever been high art to begin with. He's like the Hi-Point or Intratec of his trade.

But I still think it says a lot about his artistic integrity that he's willing to whore out his own name to third-rate authors' work.

When you become a sellout, you lose your dignity (which is why I am never selling out).

(1.) I hate to be cynical, but unless you are exceptionally talented (or, as in Tom Clancy's case, exceptionally good at appealing to a certain audience), your writing is probably going to have to remain a hobby rather than a career.

(2.) Unless you have lots of money already, of course you're going to "sell out" if given the opportunity to make millions from your work. It's a matter of the degree to which you'll sell out, not whether you'll do it.

Also, I don't despise Tom Clancy for being successful as a novelist (even if he's a poor writer); I just respect him less for making himself into a franchise after he already became successful.

Like Matt said, if you're choosing between your own pride and making a metric f*ckton of money, you'll probably sell out.

Makes me think of that guy from Youtube who sang Chocolate Rain. He was given a record deal, and published Cherry Chocolate Rain, and suddenly everyone said he was a sellout. God forbid somebody does something to make money after catching a big break.

Put yourself in Clancy's shoes. "Hmm, I'm making a lot of money to publish subpar military thrillers (and making movie deals off of some of them), but I'm getting older and running out of ideas... how awesome would it be if I could make even MORE money by slapping my name on video game and 3rd rate authors' novels?..."

Reach is right. Back to Randomness.

Anyway, I've decided to watch all of the episodes of the revived Doctor Who series while my two brothers are away at summer camp. I'm now watching the episode where the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) meets his greatest. the Dalek.
