Behind Enemy Lines - missle?
Hello,
Excellent post in the main page about the movie Behind Enemy Lines. Not techincally a gun question, but a weapon question. In the movie, Mr. Wilson's plane is shot down by a SAM missle. The missle approaches his plane and doesn't detonate. Instead it opens the nose cone and fires projectiles at the plane. Then it appears the missle detonates and ignites the plane's now leaking fuel. What kind of missle is this? It looks like the projectiles would have destroyed the plane's flight surfaces, but is it designed to perforate fuel tanks and then ignite them? Any ideas here? |

A lot of missiles against air crafts are designed to explode when near their targets, sending tons of shrapnel into it, causing massive damage. That alone can destroy a fighter.
