Sound of silencers/suppressers
Can anybody name a movie in which the sound of a round being let off with a silencer is actually correct? Also a silencer produces still quite a lot noise (higher than 100db sometimes) but the noise is abnormal.
Any suggestions why Hollywood never replicates the "true" sound of silencer in use? Thanks |

Well first off, it's called a suppressor, not a silencer. Silencer is just a Hollywood term.
Anyway, we can assume Hollywood likes the cooler noises that actual sounds. Like real guns would have that star burst flare when being fired.

Actually, Hiram Maxim, the man credited with inventing and selling the first commercially successful suppressor, called his device the Maxim Silencer, so it's not just a Hollywood term.

But the proper term is that it is called a Suppressor.

Silencer is a common term used by many manufactuers to discribe there products, such as AAC, AWC, Surefire, KAC, YHM and Gemtech.
Either word is commonly used at shoots and when meeting with the industy members trying to sell there products.

"Silencer" may be used by some manufacturers (from what I can tell, mostly third-rate ones) to describe their products, but it's not technically correct. Much the opposite. Most "suppressors" aren't "silent" at all.
