For all this talk of a lack of accountability, is the US military extending legal protection to PMCs? In the past, many mercenaries faced jail time and even death because they don't have the same legal protections as soldiers. So if a Blackwater PMC shoots a civilian in Iraq, what's stopping the Iraqi government from arresting him?

My buddy is an IT contractor who did two "tours" (for lack of a better term) each to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was armed to the teeth for his second Afghanistan tour, but I have a hard time describing him as a PMC.
