How I spent my weekend.
By shooting NFA Weapons.
I attended the 2011 Saddle Butte Machinegun shoot hosted by the Albaney Rifle and Pistol Association. My friends Mark and Lori Cook were range officers and took me as their guest. Had lots of fun, shot lots of weapons and the best part... Pictures |

I hate you.
(Don't worry, I mean that in a nice, "I'm so jealous of your awesome weekend" kind of way, not maliciously )

Not to worry Hopefully I can someday arrange to get a bunch of IMFDB people to one of these sorts of shoots. Both as a meet and Greet and for research purposes. Reasearch meaning asking questions, taking lots of pictures and most importantly shooting as many automatic weapons as we can afford.
Might not hurt if we can get a couple of the Movie Armorers to let us borrow some non-blank adapted SB Shotguns. . |

as far as the 4.7 round goes can you see why I don't like PDW rounds. I know the 5.7mm P90 round has a boost of about 50% and better penatration than a 9mm but what does the MP7 round have going for it? |

See, I don't even like the principle of a PDW in one of those oddball "penetration" calibers. Yeah it's great if you are fighting guys in body armor, maybe, but I still prefer a shorty style M-4 if I were to have to worry about protecting somebody and I couldn't carry a full size rifle.

Looked like fun.
Kind of funny them standing behind you waiting for you to be knocked back while shooting the Super Shorty. How did you like the Galil? Was the stock uncomfortable? I thought about getting a Golani in the future.

The shoot was open to the public so you had alot of novice shooters useing machineguns for the first time. The range officers were under very strict instructions not to let a NFA weapon run away and the vendors were under instructions not to let smaller shooters use machine pistols or any shooter use a beltfed offhand. Basically you were blanketed by range officers and the vendors in order to ensure that everyone was safe. Unlike Knob Creek*, this shoot makes sure that the range's death toll remains zero.
I really liked how the Galil SAR felt to me. I found that I could keep short bursts minute of car door at 100 yards. The stock was about the right lenght of pull for me. If it was mine and I was shooting it alot I would strap on a padded cheek rest but it felt fine to me. With a Golani I would sugest trying it out but sometimes the Century Arms Quallity Control is lacking so you might have to find a specialist gunsmith to tune it to get the most out of it. *Yes, people have died at Knob Creek. |

It could have possibly been a Valmet conversion. Still it had the right selector markings to be a Galil. Really it doesn't matter much to me as I was having fun that day and not really worried about the accuracy(of the build) of the conversion I was firing.
