The pre-Mk III Trooper was available with the 4" & 6" barrel. That's all they talk about in the Colt catalogs and other publications from the early sixties. I have the 1963 Colt catalog and the 1964 and 1965 Gun Digest Annuals.

Colt isn't very forthcoming with it's production numbers - unlike Smith & Wesson. But back in the fifties and sixties a lot of cops liked to the 6" even though it was more awkward to carry around on one's belt. And the 6" configuration would have been popular with hunters and target shooters as well.

My limited experience I've come across three 4" Troopers and two 6" troopers in the past few years. On the gun auction sites I visit it seems that there are usually more 4" Troopers for sale.

So in other words I have no idea.
