Striking it lucky with that kind of thing is extremely rare, though.
Stargate as a movie wasn't incredibly ground-breaking, but its 10-seasons-long TV series spin-off was a major success by any standard, especially since it was sci-fi (and many TV series in that genre never get off the ground or get cancelled after a few years).
