You cannot extrapolate from those two examples. Those are the two most liberal (and anti-gun) states in the union. Also, as I recall, an enormous number of banned rifle owners in both of those states did not comply. Try imagining something like that on the federal level (again, IF it had a chance of passing).

Yeah, an anti-gun cabinet which hasn't demonstrated very much interest in actually passing new anti-gun laws - not since Eric Holder's infamous speech brought so much backlash. Not to mention, Fast & Furious has demonstrated that this administration has no problem selling out their "friends" in the BATF when they fuck up.
Even with the cartel wars in Mexico (and those are, I would argue, a potential threat to our national security), federal gun control laws are not going to change any time soon. Definitely not before 2012 (with Obama already on the rocks), and probably not afterwards even if he gets re-elected. This isn't the 1990s anymore, and I think it's time we all learned to accept that we're actually not the underdogs anymore.
