I don't see what's wrong with them. They're usually better quality than anything you'll get from the DVD or even Blu Ray, so they show the gun much more clearly. For purposes of ID (which is what IMFDB does), that makes them preferable, IMO.
In some cases, I've seen movies where a particular gun is never shown very clearly at all, but a promotional image has a better view of it. For example, I used a promotional shot on the page for Air Force One that shows a much clearer view of an M4 than you ever see in the movie itself.
