I tried read the book once. Here's my view of it reposted from SB:

The author never saw any combat, or did anything other than sit in the desert and clear an empty trench, so he just talks about all the sex he and his buddies have had, and all the sex stories he'd heard. I read the first chapter or two, skipped ahead to see in anything interesting happened, and took it back to the library.
If you never did anything interesting, don't try to write a book. I have no idea why it ever became a movie.
