I actually read on the net that the reason for them is so that when the trench-gun is equipped with a bayonet you'll still be able to get a high grip on the barrel.I also go shooting with my friends a lot and we pass the same shotgun around so I guess it helps.

It's about $25 cheaper then a side saddle on the receiver. Installation is a lot easier seeing as you just slide the fabric holder on like a sock as oppose to having to remove the pins on the receiver and all that stuff. I also imagine that with the receiver mounted side saddle that it may get in the way if you don't have a wide gun case.

You can also get both, I mean the stock shell holder is only $5.
