TBH I don't know why any die-hard fans would have assumed this as George Lucas has had the story outline for episodes 7, 8 and 9 since he made the original films. Not sure if this is still the story that they will end up running with, but me current assumption is that they story is only based on the films.
There is a guy at Lucasarts who maintains acontinuity Holocron (database) who basically keeps all of the the parts of the EU straight, retcons things and states what is higher priority canon. He is going to have a fucking seizure when these films come out.
