I don't think it's necessary a bad thing for filmmakers to stick with what they know, although it differentiates great filmmakers from merely good or okay ones. John Woo, Kevin Smith and (gagging) Michael Bay are good when they stick with what they know, but are horrible when they don't, and I'm okay with that. Not every director can be Steven Spielberg or Robert Wise.
