Not being IMPORTED in the U.S. has a lot to do with them not appearing in movies. The few that got into the country in the 1980s are now super expensive because ATF banned their importation (ATF sure does a lot of that don't they?) I think Weapons Specialists (Rick Washburn's rental armory) has at least a few in stock, because if you go to their web site, they have a picture of one from their inventory:

Personally, I think another reason that the FAMAS doesn't appear in many movies is simply because it's so friggin'
ugly, but I guess that's a matter of taste.
BTW, I saw some sci-fi TV show from many years ago (I can't remember which one, but it was on UPN around 2000) which had BGs who were supposed to be rogue French SF. I think they were using the FAMAS, or maybe Mini-14 Bullpups standing in for the FAMAS (it's been so long that I can't remember very well anymore).
