Well, I sometimes wore a long black coat to work when I was employed at a law firm. It was kind of trench coat-ish, but it didn't make me look like a criminal. Just a douchebag.
Anyway, folding stocks were one of the features that gun controllers deemed as characteristic of "assault weapons". It's not a totally far-out idea (I know for a fact that I can easily fit my AK under a long coat with the stock removed, and I'm not even that tall a guy), but it doesn't make much sense considering that barrel lengths for rifles are already mandated at 16" or more, which negates any chance of concealing most rifles, folding stock or no.
Not to mention...have any criminals ever even tried to conceal rifles beneath trench coats? Aside from "Heat" (where the robbers used 11.5-inch ARs that wouldn't be legal for civvies to own unless registered as SBRs), I don't think I've ever heard of criminals doing this. Anyone who values a concealable weapon chooses handguns, plain and simple.
