Are there any semiautomatic handguns out there that are chambered for the .45 Long Colt? I know that auto-loaders that use rimmed cartridges generally don't do well, but has anyone made the attempt?

That doesn't seem like it could make a very GOOD gun. I mean, there are certain things you just can't do with plastic. Even Glocks have a bunch of metal parts in them.
