p226/9 in 40 shoot 9mm?

ive heard you just need to swap barrels. I know this is true in 357 sig, but a 9mm also? I would think you would also need a new recoil spring, and mags. Anyone know for sure? And what is the reliabilty when doing this?

Since they're different calibers, the extractor would need to be changed so it could properly fit the cartridge I believe.

What GM said. You would need an entirely new top end.

If you want a 226 at all, just buy a 9mm - specifically, one of the older German-made guns. Don't buy one in .40 or .357; the 226's magazine capacity in those calibers is identical to that of the 229, so you might as well just get a 229. And unlike the 226, the 229 was designed from the ground-up for those cartridges.

Im looking more at a p229, especially an elite dark in 40. Still counting down to my 21st. Id just like the ability to shoot 9mm, i think ill just get a .22 conversion though, iv heard good reviews. Also, i dont think ill go for a german gun, i like the rail and want the short reset trigger, and also, i dont notice a difference in balance like some do, to be fair ive only held a west german sig never shot one.

BTW, is there a custom shop to nickle finish guns? I think sigs with nickel inishes on controls look cool.

I hate Elites, mostly because I hate beavertails.

Why do you need the rail? Are you going to attach a flashlight or anything else? If not, the rail just looks ugly and unnecessary.

If you want a 229, there are no German-made 229s. But I would recommend a 228 if you can find one (it's arguably the best pistol SIG has ever made). The slide doesn't effect balance substantially, but it is nicer because it's lighter.

Also, if you really want a rail, then consider the P228R.

There's lots of shops that do this, but you can also buy a separate set of nickel controls and install them yourself. It might even be cheaper than the cost of sending the gun to the shop (FFL transfer fees + labor time).

The rail is to put a light on for home defense, and i want a 40, not a 9mm, the 9 would just be convienent for price, which would make a conversion cool, and im interested in the elite darks short reset trigger, adjustable night sights, and the aluminum grips, which a sig sales rep told me were slimmer, which i like. And I dont mind a beavertail, im a 1911 fan ater all.

And i dont mind the look of a rail on an elite dark, although i think a p229 (non rail) 2 tone with nickel controls looks real nice.

The 229's a wider gun than the 226 or 228 (no matter what grips you have), so if width is a problem, maybe you should at least hold those first to decide.

Night sights and short triggers can be installed on any SIG, even the older ones (I have a short trigger for my 226 that I never use, but I can install it in 5 minutes if I need to). As for the rail, that's your preference. But personally, I think rails look dumb and are useless. And I think flashlights just make the gun front-heavy (especially on a pistol with a barrel as short as the 229's).

I dont want a short trigger, i want a short RESET trigger, and the width is not a proble, i just like thinner if possible. Like a standard 1911 is no problem, but slim grips feel better. I like the 229 though, its weight and balance are perect for me and recoil is very low. A light would only be for home defense too, id take it off for range or carry.

I'd put in a reccomendation for a P229 in .40. I love my P229R. It runs flawless and feels greats in my hands. I don't use the rail, and I don't really plan to but I don't mind it being there. And if I ever want it, then I have it.
