I rented a Glock 19 and a Springfield M1911 at the range this weekend and tried both out. I'm leaning towards the Glock 19 for next purchase, and wow, the Springfield is a sight to behold. I totally get why some people are totally enamored with the M1911.

The Glock is the every man handgun. Easy to shoot, take apart and simple. The 1911 is a classic.

All we need now is one of those Calico rifles (preferably the cheapest and/or goofiest looking one), some cheap-ass web gear, and some weird foreign camo, and we'll be able to equip the high-speed-low-drag super top secret team of Special Forces operatives with the gear they'll need to take on a giant squirrel or some kind of octopus monster

Well, I'm not sure I can help you guys out with Attack of the Giant Squirrelopus, but I did end up finally testing out my BHP. Ran flawlessly with my handloads, and was dead accurate, so I'm happy.
