Reminds me, anybody know why the M14 is our rifle of choice here? I'd almost prefer an FAL type..... :)

I think the M-14 rifle is in many ways a "historically significant" weapon.
According to the related Wikipedia article which I can not say is 100% correct or not:
"It was the last so-called "battle rifle", a term applied to weapons firing full-power rifle ammunition, issued in quantity to U.S. troops."
Also, in my opinion, as designer, it is a beautiful rifle.

There must be "technical" reasons which I'm not aware of due to the lack of my firearm knowledge. (I'm here to learn :) )

I hope Nyles and many others among us share their extensive knowledge with us so we can learn more about this wonderful rifle. Also, it would be nice to hear from those who had first hand experience.

[Forrest has finished assembling his M-14 rifle]
Forrest Gump: DONE, DRILL SERGEANT!
Drill Sergeant: GUUUUUUMP! Why did you put that weapon together so quickly, Gump?
Forrest Gump: [confused] You told me to, Drill Sergeant?
Drill Sergeant: Jesus H. Christ!
[looks at stopwatch]
Drill Sergeant: This is a new company record! If it wouldn't be such a waste of a damn-fine enlisted man I'd recommend you for OCS! You are gonna be a general someday, Gump, now disassemble your weapon and continue!

IIRC Gump used an M 16 in actual combat ;)

m14s are used in the national matches, they are extremely accuarate, and they look cool, and are a sniper weapon system in several forms used by the US military.

That's what I heard. They are very accurate. Has anybody here any experience with M14s?

Background picture set up was a bitch. Had to bring the entire arsenal out. :)

That truly is an impressive picture. I'm getting a headache squinting at the thing trying to ID all the weapons in it. So far I can make out a Desert Eagle, M1A1 Thompson, M4A1 carbine, Type II AK-47, M134 Minigun, Luger P08, M16A2 with M203 grenade launcher, FN SCAR, MP5A2 with slimline handguard, M1911A1, MP5K, M60 machine gun, Barrett M107, a Smith & Wesson Model 29, and of course the crossed M14's overtop of it all.
