My new gun

I decided it was time to add another pistol to my stable so I picked up a Sig P229 in .40S&W. I bought it used but it's in good shape.

Looks cool. Can't go wrong with a SIG.

Zulu Two Six 03-22-2010 01:28 AM

very cool indeed.
sigs are a great choice.
im gonna get one (maybe p226 or p228?) and a ruger mini 14 sometime in the future

Bugabear 03-22-2010 03:00 AM

Very nice looking. How much are they?

FirearmFan 03-22-2010 03:16 AM

MSRP for the P229 is $976 without night sites. So depending on where you shop for a new one it probably ranges from $850-$900. Like I mentioned before I bought it used from a gun shop. I paid around $650 for it. There are a few small dings on the frame which you can see in the picture, but all in all it's in pretty good shape. I haven't shot it yet but I've shot p229's before and they are very enjoyable.

k9870 03-22-2010 02:24 PM

Id love a p229 elite dark with both barrels (40/357).

MT2008 03-22-2010 06:27 PM

Good choice! P229s are nice. Did you buy it as a Certified Pre-Owned? They tend to be pretty cheap, and SIG makes sure they're in tip-top shape. I've heard CPOs are usually a pretty good bargain (although I didn't buy my P226 that way).

k9870 03-22-2010 07:31 PM

The CPO may have finish wear but all parts are in such good condition its accuaracy and reliability will be like new.

S&Wshooter 03-22-2010 08:07 PM

Nice gun! I've heard good things about the P229. Sooner or later I'm going to have to pick one up for my self

Bugabear 03-23-2010 01:49 AM

Thanks. I've only heard good things about Sig's. Planning on getting anything extra for it? Also what's this business about the DAK?

k9870 03-23-2010 02:05 AM

DAK sucks, go DA/SA.

I thought you hated SIGs, too?

I might pick up a .357 sig barrel for it but I haven't decided yet. Other than that nothing else as of yet, besides a holster or two and more spare mags.

Just the top heavy crappy models. I also sort of like the P230

ManiacallyChallenged 03-23-2010 06:25 PM

Saw a beautiful condition P220 at Cabela's today.
If I had 900 bucks... C:

Dude, that's way too damn much for a pistol unless it's a custom job

ManiacallyChallenged 03-24-2010 03:32 AM

Nope, just in perfect condition.

There were also a ton of beautiful Mosins, all for about 120, including a model 42(the short one? think it's called 42).

My favorite, a Norinco SKS. Too many cool guns to count.

All of the SIGs with CNC-milled slides have the "top heavy" feel. I don't mind it too much, but I do like stamped slides better. So do most hardcore SIG fans.

That being said, the P229 is by far the best of SIG's milled-slide pistols.

I guess im in the minority here where i dont consider SIGs unbalanced. They feel nice in hand. I love the feel of a metal gun too.

Have you ever shot one of the older-model P220s, P226s, or P228s? If you've never shot a stamped-slide SIG, you probably won't appreciate the difference, but if you've shot both types, you'll probably find that you prefer the older models. That's why used P228s are currently in such high demand right now - and why SIG decided to put out the P228R.

k9870 03-24-2010 03:43 PM

Only shot new models here.

Out of all of SIG's pistols, I like the P229 and the P230. All in all, most SIGs just aren't my style. Also the slide release on the P226 (and I can imagine they are the same on most of the P22X series) aren't easily to operate because A). I'm lefthanded, and B). There is no way in hell I can work it with the knuckle of my thumb. If SIG were to make left handed models of their pistols, I'd probably go out and snatch up a P220

k9870 03-24-2010 08:28 PM

I dont even use the p229 release, just pull and release slide.

I think I'm going to get a P229 after I buy the FAL

k9870 03-24-2010 09:01 PM

The p229 Elite Dark is sexy.

Yournamehere 03-24-2010 11:56 PM

Yeah I rarely use the slide release either, I just started slingshotting (that's what I call yanking the slide to release it) and never stopped. On occasion I will use the release just so I know how it feels on the gun, but 99 percent of the time I slingshot.

I have sort of a classic taste and so I don't like the SIGs with the rails on them as much as I do the ones without, but I am warming up to them and rails in general. I like the idea of having a light on my handgun. Anyway, as far as the P229 goes, I don't see much reason for getting one over a full size P226, aside from the fact that it's a government acency's gun and the gun is rated for .357 SIG unlike the older counterparts. It's considered a "compact" gun but it's not much smaller than a full sized P226, i:e it's not much better for concealed carry. It's for guys who will carry a full sized gun anyway but would like whatever edge they can get, and the P229 gives them a small one. The .357 SIG conversion is also quite expensive (factroing in the barrel change and the cost of ammo) compared to a 9mm or .40 counterpart, but if money's no object and you like the extra power, I can't argue with that.

I'd rather have a 9mm P226 like Matts but the P229 does have a certain charm. I wouldn't mind getting a deal on one like FirearmFan has.

Me three. In fact, I've always thought that engaging the slide release was going out of style. I've read posts on the 1911 message boards by older shooters (60s, 70s) who blame slide releases for causing arthritis in their thumbs after 50+ years of reloading their 1911s that way.

So I don't think the slide release is a big disadvantage for lefties. It shouldn't be a disadvantage for lefties on ANY semi-auto pistol, frankly.

I can give you a good one: Magazine capacity. My biggest beef with the .40 and .357 P226s is that they have the same mag capacity as the P229. Given that, I would much rather have the 229.

In 9mm (which is the caliber I shoot most often), it's 226 all the way. But if I ever wanted to upgrade to .40 or .357, I would definitely get the 229.

ManiacallyChallenged 03-25-2010 03:29 AM

SKS!

Beautiful! Much nicer than the one I saw there. There was a nice Mini 14 too... got one of those to show us?

FirearmFan 03-25-2010 03:38 AM

I was at the range shooting and afterwards I started looking around the gun shop and aside from that I wanted a Sig, I didn't really know for sure what I would end up with. I've already got 1911, Glock, HK, and XD covered so I knew Sig was next. The P229 was the best deal and the best gun they had available at the time. They had a P220 SAO but it had massive amounts of holster wear. I don't mind a little holster wear but this was too much, plus I'd prefer to give it the wear myself. They had a used P226 but the price was too high to justify buying used, I could have spent a little more and picked up a new one. A few weeks ago I spotted a used but excellent shape P220 with night sights at my favorite gun shop for $599.00 and I would have grabbed that but I didnt have the cash at the time.

All in all I'm happy with my Sig. Also I'm thinking about trying to become a Federal Agent and 2 of my 3 main choices use P229 so it's probably good to have some background with it. (US Marshals = Glock 22/23, Secret Service = Sig P229, ICE = Sig P229)

Unfortunately I don't have a Mini 14 to show you. Someday perhaps.

That's an interesting point, but with that in mind, the preference between a P226 and a P229 comes from what one thinks is more advantageous, a full size gun or a "compact gun". On one hand, there isn't much weight or barrel length difference so I don't think performance suffers with the smaller gun, but on the other hand, the P229 might not be much easier to conceal even though smaller (not by much, and it's still the same width), so it's personal preference at this point (this all being relative to .40 and .357 pistols, another preference loophole which, being generally a 9mm guy, I don't jump through.

I like both guns and wouldn't mind either, but I do generally prefer full size guns, and so if I could only have 1 SIG, it would be an older P226 in 9mm as it fits all my intents and purposes. If I were a millionaire, though I'd buy a P229 in .357 SIG just because it's a cool gun in a cool cartridge, 'nuff said.

ManiacallyChallenged 03-25-2010 04:44 PM

If I were a millionaire, I would pay the BoT guy "Old Painless" to help me restore old guns. His are all so beautiful.
