S&Wshooter 07-02-2014 03:02 PM

I'm turning 21 in a few days, and I was going to buy a gun of some sort, but now I don't have the funds. Y'all help me decide what to get when I do have the money

Charter Arms Bulldog .44 Special

S&W Shield 9mm

Another S&W 3rd gen (probably .40 this time, but .45 if I can find it)

Mossberg Maverick 88 (I needs a shotgun, since the Winchester 1300 got traded off)

S&W 638

Zastava M70A

The Zastava Sig-looking pistol that has a different name every time I see one

S&Wshooter 07-04-2014 04:11 AM

If I get no answers, I'm going to buy another 4506 or a 4566, so I can do stupid shit to it that I wouldn't do if I only had one. Such as getting a different finish, having forward cocking serrations added, etc

Excalibur 07-07-2014 05:53 PM

I would ask what do you plan to do with the gun? A range shooting gun or SHTF gun or a CCW gun?

If you plan to conceal it, get one that you can hide well.

Are you comfortable with the striker fire type trigger or a DA/SA trigger of the 4506 or 4566?

If you want to go with a revolver or the DA/SA trigger guns, can you run it well when shit hits the fan? Are you a guy with a thumb safety mentality or no safety mentality since they just came out with a Shield that has no thumb safety.

All these factors goes into what you plan to use this gun. And of course above all, get practice and training for it, regardless of your purpose.

It is up to y'all. I already have basically everything I *need* :D

S&Wshooter 07-08-2014 03:45 PM

Was talking to parents about my idea with getting a 4566 and having some things done to it, and they basically said "we're doing that when we're done with [lawsuit thing involving family business)", so I'm just sitting here all  because I didn't expect it and it feels like alot to get from them

Excalibur 07-09-2014 05:03 PM

Look, it's your gun and your money and really it shouldn't involve anything of your family. So get your gun and have fun.

Personally, I think you should get a Shield, the NTS version or a Glock in 9mm.

I was telling them what I was thinking about doing, and they just out of nowhere are all "we're doing that later", so I was fairly confused. Somewhat hoping they forget, because I don't really need it

I like the Shield; handled one at the 2013 NRA convention, liked how it felt, liked the trigger, and liked the sights. You don't see them at the local shops too often, but one would definitely be worth ordering or searching for. Wish I could still work so I had the money to go get one whenever rather than waiting however long. I really ought to shop around for an IWB, too, if I decide on it

Excalibur 07-14-2014 03:00 AM

Go check out the Glock 42. It's a really handy gun. I was thinking about buying it since a buddy of mine let me shot his.

I've been wanting to check one out just for the sake of it, but I doubt I'll like it all that much or want to buy one, just because Glocks aren't really my thing. I had a chance to handle a few when I went to pick up my FNX-45 from my FFL, and I only really cared for the feel of the 19 (they just feel wrong, and when I shot the 17 a while back I didn't do so great). I wish I could run a revolver as well as I'd like, or I'd just go get a J frame or Bulldog and be done with it

I'd be operator as fuck if I could feasibly carry with a shoulder rig and tote the 686 or 4506, but that's stupid. The only upside to it would be that if I had to shoot to defend myself with either pistol, I'd have an extra bit of confidence since I'm so used to them

S&Wshooter 07-16-2014 03:02 AM

Glock 42 is $50 more locally than the Shield, and I like 9mm better. Hmm

Excalibur 07-16-2014 09:12 PM

There's also the XDS in 9mm, very handy gun as well. The Shield is pretty good, but the newer version doesn't have the thumb safety, which is a plus.

I remember a while back that I *almost* got an XD in .45, but I held off for some reason. Then the next time I went to a show, I found mah perfect-condition 4506. I think I passed it up because of the grip safety or something not feeling "right".

S&Wshooter 07-17-2014 01:28 AM

Man, I am really weird when it comes to pistols, I guess. The High Standard taught me that if one does not feel 100% right to me, I'm going to have trouble with it sometime down the line. There is no "well I guess I can get used to it"; if something bothers me, it probably won't go away

EXAMPLE: Want CZ-75 for a while-->can't find one-->FINALLY finds a table full at show-->handle one-->know I'll never get one because it just does not feel right-->shoot one years later-->shoot it okay, hand-feel bugs me the whole time

Think H&K Mk.23 is cool-->handle one-->"Aw, c'mon"-->shoot one years and years later at indoor range-->Feels wrong the whole time, know I'd never *feel* competent with one

Excalibur 07-17-2014 05:11 PM

Everyone have different preferences in which pistol feels good in their hands and which one they can run well. Some people can run a Sig pretty good and others like Glocks. It's really up to how well you can shoot a gun.

Yep. Speaking of Sigs, I would love a P239, but I have trouble with Sig controls, so it probably won't happen. Sigs are comfy as hell

Excalibur 07-18-2014 12:15 PM

Sigs are comfy to hold, and also a bit more pricey compared to others.

What about the S&W M&P series?

Polymer guns, my preference:

FN > S&W > Sphinx > Walther > CZ > Steyr > H&K > EAA/Tanfoglio > Beretta > SIG > Springfield > Kahr > Glock > Ruger > Kel-Tec > Taurus

Been a good while since I checked the forum and logged in. Glad to see mostly everyone is still around. Hope all is well with everybody.

My latest purchase, Colt WWII reproduction M1911A1, been trying to get one for years. Would like to get an authentic one from WWII eventually.

Dude, awesome. I've seen these on gunbroker from time to time but only like, five in the decade I've been looking. I am truly jelly.

Thanks man. Yeah very rarely will they show up for sale. I think most are sitting in peoples Colt collections.

Next up as far as "unicorns" gun go is a S&W Model 27 with 3.5" barrel. A 4" Python would be cool, but prices have gotten crazy.

flawless. This gun store clerk tried to talk me out of buying it saying the large muzzle flash makes it impossible to fire follow up shots. I got the muzzle booster device and it works fine.

Excalibur 09-07-2015 12:16 PM

Add a Thordsen cheek piece or a Brace on it for better "comfort" unless you plan to truly SBR it

I want to SBR it but maryland gun laws are a pain in the butt. Even if I file the NFA paperwork to SBR it, it still needs to be 29 inches OAL which means I would need the proper sized stock and would probably have to permanently pin the muzzle booster in place. I got 1 one point sling to a rear attachment swivel and that should compensate for the lack of a stock If I can get it tight and push forward.

Excalibur 09-10-2015 01:17 AM

So then get some other devices where it isn't illegal to put on but isn't an illegal SBR if it's for your own entertainment and if you don't unload vids of you using it and calling it an SBR when it legally wouldn't be

S&Wshooter 11-01-2015 11:52 PM

Damn near brand new S&W 39-2, barely any wear, perfect bore

Very slick. How much coin have you got sunk into it? Or do you prefer to keep that private?

So you got a tax stamp for 2 and 1/2 inches less barrel? Nice donkey dick by the way.

oh, thinking about that, I'm thinking about making my AR a little more suited to the fact I'm nearly half a foot taller than average, and have huge hands; been shopping around for a longer collapsible stock (VLTOR EMOD is top contendor), and got a "ergonomic) Blackhawk grip

neat rifle, though

Oh everyone should have a BBQ Gun. You know the Detroit PD used to issue nickel plated revolvers to it's officers up until the seventies. Detroit is very damp and up until the seventies when stainless steel became common nickel provided better protection. Bunch of cops running around with pimp guns. Seems appropriate for Detroit. :D

Exactly. It's permanently attached. I wouldn't bother with a tax stamp over the extra barrel if it was the only way to get a 14.5 inch barrel.

Never heard a VFG referred to as a donkey dick. I just got that part actually. SKD had a blowout sale and I got it for way under MSRP. I have it set up to where I can QD it and screw on a Grip Pod so I have a means of stability for accuracy testing/zeroing. I also have the full length version but I'm rocking the stubby for now just so I can say the rifle is 9 pounds dead.

And to answer Jcordell, the base rifle setup with a swapped upper was about 1300, with the total package including spare parts at just under 3300. Small price to pay for a super sweet M4gery if you ask me. Most of the excess is the optic and flashlight as well which are top tier kit. Unfortunately for my bank account as well, though, I am in the process of swapping the upper a second time due to a problem with the barrel nut, argh. Hopefully I will get enough resale value out of the current upper to compensate for the cost.

It's Army slang for the stubby ones

Excalibur 11-05-2015 01:24 AM

Really? I guess I need to ask. The Marines I know call them broomsticks...well for the typically long ones. Haven't seen anyone use the stubby grips.

Yournamehere 12-30-2015 06:35 AM

So I dun f'ed up and bought a West German P226 on my credit card cause the price was very very right, and cause I needed a Fox Mulder to go with my Dana Scully and Gillian Anderson (my two P228s). Can anyone give me a lead on Mulder's holster or something like it? Here's a pic of the props that make up Mulder's kit:

http://www.imfdb.org/images/a/af/Mulder_P226_Props.jpg

It's a black leather thumb break OWB, that's all I can make of it. Any astute observations on the genuine holster or a facsimile of it would be appreciated.

I'll get pics of the gun at some point.
