I have a laptop with a Core 2 Duo T8300 running at 2.4-GHz, 4-GB memory, and 32-bit architecture. My GPU is a GeForce 8400M GS. And I'm running Vista (ugh!)

Because I pretty much lost interest in PC gaming about 4 years ago, I have totally failed to keep up with all the advances in CPU and GPU tech. For instance, can somebody explain to me what it means that I have a Core 2 Duo 2.4-GHz? Does that mean that I have two processors running at 2.4-GHz for a combined speed of 4.8-GHz? I literally don't understand how to assess computers' speed anymore. When I was in HS, it was very simple - for instance, I remember how excited everyone was in 2000 when the first 1000-MHz Intel and AMD processors came out. It was like, "Yeah, we finally reached the GHz!" But now there's all kinds of stuff about the caches and buses that I don't understand. How much longer until PCs can run at 1-THz, for instance?

I hate computer gaming, at least with a console I don't need to spend half my income updating to keep up with new technology.

Gunmaster45 04-07-2009 09:32 PM

I have an Xbox 360 but I'm not hooked up to the net so no LIVE. :(

My username is Gunmaster45 though, so I'll be easy to find if I ever hook up. It'd be kind of wierd to use the headsets though, we'd actually know what we sound like!

And Matt, I use the computer to go on the internet pretty much alone. I don't understand any of that computer crap, it's all greek to me. My computer nut uncle is in Florida now, so I hope nothing needs fixing in the future or I'm screwed.

Yeah, but at least with PC games, you can extend the replay value by downloading modifications and even making your own. In high school, I worked free agent as a weapons modeler on several mods, though none of them were ever finished or released. Still, that basic difference always appealed to me.

Also, working on PCs used to be fun for me, in kind of the same way that working on cars is fun for other people. But sadly, when I went to college, I got out of it when I chose to major in History and Political Science. Now I don't know jack shit about computer hardware anymore... :(

Damn. I was looking forward to seeing what kind of games we could play at that speed. I expected we'd be able to create near-VR type games by that point. :( :D

Nope. Ragnarok. But at 999ghz games will be 100% photorealistic.
