Hunting season

Has anyone else been successful this season?

S&Wshooter 11-07-2010 01:45 AM

I usually kill something the first or second time I hunt each season, and I'll be hunting soon

mpe2010 11-07-2010 02:30 AM

What do you hunt?

I got my deer friday. Now I just have to wait for elk season to start.

k9870 11-07-2010 01:58 PM

Not yet, just went hunting the first time yesterday

Jcordell 11-07-2010 05:27 PM

Boy. I haven't hunted since the fall of 90. Managed to get an elk, but it was a joint-kill. My buddy shot it once and I shot it again after we had to go looking for it in the bush. LOTS of work getting it out. Then life came crashing in and I haven't been since. Today as I write this it's pouring rain and snowing at higher elevations. As I look at the weather I realize that I might never go hunting again. I've come to appreciate roofs, dry beds, and central heating. ;)

I'm not anti-hunting mind you. Just anti-cold, wet and miserable.

That is so me!

k9870 11-07-2010 10:31 PM

Hunting gets you in the woods, gets you in fresh air, and is a good workout walking, and its fun trying to find deer.

mpe2010 11-07-2010 10:40 PM

So what guns do you guys use to hunt? I either use my Ruger M77 30-06 for Elk and Pronghorn or my Russian SKS for deer.

k9870 11-07-2010 10:53 PM

Marlin 1894c. 158 grain JSP.

I hunt in heavy brush with the odds of a shot over 50 yards very minimal.

Im going to hunt coyotes after deer season.

This year since i was in the high country looking for elk and monster white tail, I used my Howa 1500 thumbhole in a 338 win mag with 225gr accubonds...and as a side arm for the thicker brush areas i had my Glock
10mm with 200gr buffalo bore.

mpe2010 11-25-2010 10:20 PM

I know that 10mm can be used for predator defense, but how powerful is it compared to a 357 magnum or 45 ACP?

More powerful then both. A 45acp is designed for thin skinned creators like us, yes its 230gr but only goin around 800fps. A .357 in a bear load is 180gr and still only goes 1130fps. NOW!!! the 10mm is a 200gr FMJ going over 1200FPS...thats penatration with power.

Always thought a 10 like a delta would be awesome.

A delta would be cool if Colt would put some workmenship into their products...The only guys that make a mainstream 10mm that is worth anything is Dan Wesson, Kimber, and Glock. I personally went with the Kimber and the glock and i love them both.

k9870 11-26-2010 07:29 PM

I wouldnt want a colt but that style of full size 1911 is cool. Id want a Springfield Armory, if they made one......

You listening springfield?

Dan wesson discontinued 10mm and the commander bobtail classic, which was a stupid move.

Dont like Kimber or Glock.

k9870 11-26-2010 08:24 PM

And Colt has craftsmanship, they just dont care about the civilian market, do no R&D, and all their fanboys think that colts the best since they are "the original" or whatever. They care so much about the mil/le market they just give us basic guns and jack the price up since it has the colt name.

You have to admit, you could buy a Springfield for much less than a comparable Colt (similiar features)

k9870 11-27-2010 01:38 AM

Springfield: Great guns, good price, lifetime warranty, and full custom shop, plus excellent customer service.

Only bad thing is they billboard their name on every gun.

But they are the best value in 1911s.

I totally could have bought a lower end Springfield instead of the High Standard, but I was being a cheap bastard that day. The extra $50 and the money for a beavertail would have been worth it

k9870 11-27-2010 01:27 PM

trade the hi standard, buy a milspec. The milspec is known to be very easy to customize and extremely reliable. And if you get springers custom shop to do the work its all under warranty, other custom shops void the warranty for anything they replaced, springer covers the new stuff.

I already promised it to my dad so he could keep it as his truck gun. Business is starting to pick up for him, so he'll probably buy it in the next year

Here's my method of hunting: Yell "It's coming for us!" and fire a bunch of random shots at the animal.

And then the animal runs before you can pull the trigger, game warden gets pissed because you were letting out random shots

How may game wardens are in your hunting area?...We can shoot all day long and never see one Warden...maybe a border patrol or two but they're only looking for drugs.

Our lease is next to a National Forest in which a whole lot of people hunt, so there are quite a few

I know this is an old post, but I really have to voice my agreement. I've already spent too much time wet and freezing my ass off in the woods with a rifle to do it for free.

Now early bear or muzzle-loader seasons, that I've been considering.

I've always wanted to hunt bear up in Canada

k9870 12-01-2010 02:45 PM

a game warden stopped us to check licences, they dont stroll around in the woods though they go to parking areas.
