I saw Machete friday. Meh

Spartan198 09-22-2010 11:50 PM

Sorry, but those soldiers in Halo aren't Spartans and never will be.

Oh, so they aren't apprentice-fucking warriors who would get crushed if they encountered Vikings?

First off, there's no concrete proof backing up the "apprentice-fucking", as you so eloquently put it.

As far as getting "crushed" by Vikings goes, the Spartan army was long gone by the time Viking expansion started. The earliest recorded Viking raids occurred in the late 7th Century AD, whereas Sparta ceased to be an independent power around 800 years earlier when they were forced into the Achaean League in 146 BC after a disastrous defeat by a combined Achaean/Macedonian force.

The final recorded military action by the Spartans was after the Roman defeat at Adrianople in 378 AD when a Spartan phalanx met and defeated a force of raiding Visigoths.

So, no, the Spartans were never crushed by the Vikings.

S&Wshooter 09-23-2010 07:31 PM

I stand corrected. They were Pederasts.
Quote:

Engaged in pederasty (what we would now call pedophilia).
Older men were expected to have erotic loving relationships with boys (and were fined if they didn’t). This was also a mentor relationship.
With the Spartans, it was a “chaste” pederasty – actual coitus was not allowed, but other behavior was.
Even in this, self-control was paramount.
http://www.slideshare.net/dewert/52-athens-and-sparta

Quote:

Sparta, another Dorian polis, is thought to be the first city to practice athletic nudity, and one of the first to formalize pederasty. [Thomas F. Scanlon, "The Dispersion of Pederasty and the Athletic Revolution in Sixth-Century BC Greece," in "Same-Sex Desire and Love in Greco-Roman Antiquity and in the Classical Tradition of the West," ed. B. C. Verstraete and V. Provencal, Harrington Park Press, 2005, pp.64-70] The Spartans believed that the love of an older, accomplished aristocrat for an adolescent was essential to his formation as a free citizen. The "agoge", the education of the ruling class, was thus founded on pederastic relationships required of each citizen. [Erich Bethe,"Die Dorische Knabenliebe: ihre Ethik und ihre Idee," 1907, 441, 444]

Many ancient writers held that Spartan pederasty was chaste, though still erotic. [Xenophon, "Constitution of the Lacedaemonians," II.13-14] Plutarch also describes the relationships as chaste, and states that it was as unthinkable for a lover to sexually consummate a relationship with his beloved as for a father to do so with his own son. [Cicero, "De Rep.," iv. 4] Aelian goes even farther, stating that if any couple succumbed to temptation and indulged in carnal relations, they would have to redeem the affront to the honor of Sparta by either going into exile or taking their own lives. [Aelian, "Var. Hist.," III.12]

The lover was responsible for the boy's training. Pederasty and military training were intimately connected in Sparta, as in many other cities. The Spartans, claims Athenaeus [Athenaeus of Naucratis, "The Deipnosophists," XIII: Concerning Women] sacrificed to Eros before every battle.

How did this turned into a debate about ancient gay Greeks?

k9870 09-25-2010 03:51 PM

I just got reach, my first halo game. What I dont get is how its 500 years in the future, weve colonized planets with magacities, and travel through subspace fast in huge battlecruisers, but the guns are mybe 20 years advanced from now at the most. And the spartan armor that can survive re-entry into the atmosphere but you drownd in water right off.

According to the Halo wiki, the assault rifle and DMR still use 7.62mm NATO.

Excalibur 09-25-2010 04:23 PM

Well if you were expecting laser guns and blaster rifles, it seems human weapons hasn't changed much or really need to change I guess.

funkychinaman 09-25-2010 04:35 PM

Humans do have the Spartan laser though.

I'm watching Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I'm not a huge fan of Romantic Comedies, but this one's an exception since it's produced by Judd Apatow.

I see in the future smaller ammo hitting like todays large ammo, so we could carry more, have larger magazines and still wreck people, and maybe have a optic on the battle rifle. and the ability to swim

Excalibur 09-25-2010 09:43 PM

Yeah, but some people are hoping for phasers and laser guns. The Spartan Laser is a one shot charge up thing. It isn't an infantry rifle. It's a heavy weapon to take out vehicles.

We only have two laser weapons that I know of in the works. One is the size of a medium machine gun and all it does is blind people. The other has to be mounted on a jumbo jet and disables missiles by burning tiny holes in them. Laser and other energy weapons of the future will not be like in Star Wars.

Just saw The Town. Fucking amazing. I consider it one of Ben Affleck's best performances.

Yes indeed.

For all of the action and the way the plot leads, you have to give Affleck and/or the screenwriters credit for not taking the (overtly) obvious way out at the end. Affleck really stepped up his A-game, here, too. You start to feel for him near the end, especially after his first confrontation with Fergie. Also, I do have to say, I'm glad they didn't follow the book (Prince of Thieves) completely through.

Excalibur 09-26-2010 03:17 AM

Though now that I am aware that gunshots are very loud that battle at Fenway must have been loud as hell.

Swordfish941 09-26-2010 05:29 PM

I really need to buy this movie:

Another romantic comedy? I need to lend you my copy of the Wild Geese so you can rid yourself of the desire to see romantic comedies

It's not a romantic comedy. It's a black comedy adapted from a book by Chuck Palahniuk (the same guy who wrote Fight Club).

If it looks like a romantic comedy and sounds like a romantic comedy, it is a romantic comedy

Okay, I have seen it, and it's not a romantic comedy.

It's okay, not great. For me, the highlight of the film is the fact that the chick that plays Britta in "Community" is in the film as a stripper. (And you do see the goods.)

The trailer makes it look like a romantic comedy

There are elements of a romantic comedy in there, but I don't think it'd make a great date movie.

Another movie that is even less of a romantic comedy, 500 Days of Summer.

Swordfish941 09-29-2010 08:59 PM

The guy that wrote Choke wrote this:

predator20 09-29-2010 10:39 PM

Choke is a good film. Rockwell's character gets the girl in the end, but no way I would call it a romantic comedy. I mean he shits on himself while in a police station after having a ball stuck up his ass for several days.

Swordfish941 09-29-2010 11:21 PM

I love the stripper's stage name, Cherry Daiquiri.

I thought he coughed it up.

And having something that was up your ass come up and out of your mouth is better?

(And I caught it on HBO. So maybe you saw the unrated version.)

When the police were questioning him he did the fake choke. Then the guy did the heimlich on him and he shit himself. I don't remember the ball coming out of his mouth. But it's been a while since I watched it, so maybe it did. The handjob scene was funny too.

Anybody going to buy the Sacrifice DLC for Left 4 Dead when it comes out?

Swordfish941 09-30-2010 09:04 PM

I'm gonna buy this movie this weekend:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9hxkqzY0js&NR=1

k9870 09-30-2010 09:08 PM

Medal of honor coming up? I mean, its kinda a cross of BC2 and MW2, it looks like BC2 without destructible enviroments (all games need destructable environments) but has quick respawn, like MW2, without having to wait around. And you can shoot taliban :)
