Recent press for imfdb

Hey guys, not sure if any of you noticed but we've been making the rounds in the blogosphere lately, we may get some new users - be kind. :D They all have good things to say as far as I can tell. :)

We're also making the rounds on twitter and facebook. It's interesting, for me at least, to see what the general public think of the site and what pages they find interesting.

gee. I'm blushing. :o

They say even bad publicity is publicity, so that collection of twitter comments isn't all bad.
Apparently we "jumped the shark" at some point. Not sure how this is possible, because it's a wiki, but hey.

Well the writer of that apparently either doesn't like ANIME or he really doesn't like HELLSING, whichever is the case.

What really makes me NERVOUS is that now people are COUNTING on us to be correct, and we have tons and TONS of new or anonymous members making pretty elementary mistakes. And I'm not even talking about the idiots who vandalize pages intentionally. With that in mind, people have to be EXTRA VIGILANT that we're checking on and improving pages (and I don't mean pissing matches about how many pages you've fixed either)....

When people count on you (aka us at IMFDB) for accurate information, we have an obligation to do the best we can to be correct and accurate. And to admit it when we are NOT sure.

Yes yes no pressure at all...

And what does it mean to "jump the shark"? I haven't heard that one in a while

AdAstra2009 01-21-2011 06:32 AM

On an episode of Happy Days, the gang went to California and Fonzie entered some dumb contest involving water skiing a ramp over shark infested waters. The show went downhill after that and never recovered. When a show "jumps the shark" is when it starts an irreversible decline in quality.

TVTropes is a horrendous mish mash of fanboy circle jerking. They need to get some real editors and quality controllers in there to kick ass and clean things up. Really good idea in theory, but horrible, horrible execution. Imagine Wikipedia, but all the articles are their "...in pop culture" sections only. Bleh.

It is also know as "Cousin Oliver Syndrome".

Excalibur 01-22-2011 05:22 AM

Ok, I understand the term jumping the shark, but that refers to the show. From the way the comment was worded, it looked like that I was jumping the shark.

Ex,

The only shark "jumping" that we can think of you doing involves open water and a great white succuming to knife wounds. :D

Excalibur 01-22-2011 05:48 AM

I can totally imagine myself jumping at Jaws with my big knife and stabbing it to death

ManiacallyChallenged 01-22-2011 02:36 PM

So the moral of this story is, try hard from now on.
Don't screw up or the feds will shut us down.
Something like that.

Or you could buy a spear gun and not get mauled by a shark

MT2008 01-22-2011 03:56 PM

Better than that annoying SomethingAwful piece from a while back (remember it?)

k9870 01-22-2011 06:42 PM

I remember, not that I care about anything from something awful, that whole sites a joke.

You've been banned too, eh?

Rockwolf66 01-22-2011 07:33 PM

Haven't been banned from there but someone from there hates me enough to have written a hitpiece

The thread they started with using me as an example was written five years after I left that town and painted me as some perverted psycho.

I don't know why that person hates me so badly I know I wasn't caught in bed with their mother or any other female relative of theirs.

I wrote to the guy personally to comment on it and he admitted that he loved IMFDB. Some of the jokes are silly and some of them are based on stuff that we've since changed.

hahahaha, I was the one who wrote the 'basketweave holster' comment, though I wrote it poorly. I meant to say (at the time) that the 'high ride basketweave holster' that Elizabeth Hurley holds her 92FS in is the wrong type, since SFPD used lower hanging 'gunslinger' style holsters to quicken draw time.' It was my poor typing skills that implied that "basketweave" was somehow wrong. :D

So far I have not seen any really bad article that SLAM us. I do see guys acting all high and mighty in the 'comments section' of these articles saying how we're all inaccurate and how they know better. Yeah sure, pal. I am so sure that those guys who can 'set us straight' will be here working hard and fixing up the pages. Aren't those the idiotic anonymous users who make a bunch of WRONG edits, only never to be heard from again?

k9870 01-22-2011 07:53 PM

To get banned i would have had to joined, which i have absolutely no intention of doing as its a waste of my time.

I actually the site is pretty cool, good for a laugh. The informal-ness adds to it.
