I almost feel sorry for the dude with the Carcano. He sort of looks like he is sad that he does not have as cool a gun as the other guys

funkychinaman 04-17-2011 12:35 AM

That's quite a mix, especially for a people who have been living under Gadhafi's boot for so many years. Props to the guy with the ax in his belt.

predator20 04-17-2011 12:46 AM

The Hi-Power seems popular, at least I think that's one in the third pic. There's definitely one in the first pic.

Finally a war I can get behind.

k9870 04-17-2011 01:07 AM

Really burt?

I like the dual shotguns and axe.

Qaddafi should have been nuked years ago, that's not really a controversial opinion.

BeardedHoplite 04-18-2011 01:14 AM

From the first pic I think it's easy to see who's arming the rebels...

k9870 04-18-2011 01:37 AM

Well you definitely can tell there was an influence over the region.

Actually, it isn't so clear. Most of the rebel guns apparently were taken out of old Royal Libyan Army stocks (which were European in origin - FN FALs, FN MAGs, Carcanos) mixed with communist bloc gear captured from Libyan soldiers. Fabrique Nationale did have a contract in 2008-2009 IIRC to refurbish older weapons and supply small quantities of FN 2000s and FN 303s, but that was dwarfed by the $4 billion in weapons Russia was supposed to supply.

Many of the Gadhaffi forces appear to be armed with AK-103s:

FN would really do business with Libya?

Not a surprise, Europe had numerous business opportunities/investments in Libya after Gadhaffi started getting friendly with the west in 2003 and the Libyans did try to buy some weapons from Europe- the FN deal was apparently very controversial in Belgium at the time. There's even a video where Saif Gadhaffi (Muammar's son) was waving around a G36, so the most elite units probably do have western arms.

Evidence of a FN 2000 (Photo is of a Libyan minder who got hit while escorting reporters around the battlefield):

If I ran a gun company id refuse business with bad guys, profits be damned. But back to the pics, does that guy have a mag taped to the muzzle o his ak? I see the dual mags taped up but it looks like a third on the muzzle.

No, that mag appears to belong to the guy waving his rifle behind him.

Yep just angles making it weird, many of them seem to be firing on areial targets, like the guy laying in the road with the bipod on his feet in the air.

S&Wshooter 04-18-2011 02:42 AM

Someone should give Carcano dude one of those F2000's so he won't be sad because he has a lame gun

Whoooaaa, a M1919A6. My buddy took a picture of one he ran across in Iraq, but it was just on display. How the hell does he get ammo for that thing? Canvas belts?

ManiacallyChallenged 04-20-2011 03:58 AM

These pics are pretty awesome. I'm liking the Sterling and the Beretta M12.

Don't let Carcano guy see that. His self esteem is already really low and this will just make it worse

k9870 04-20-2011 08:38 PM

Yeah with all that gold you could sell it for a better gun:cool:

MT2008 04-21-2011 02:37 PM

There's some interesting stuff in these pics. I always think it's interesting when you can look at the guns being used in a particular conflict zone, and you can tell a lot about that country's history (i.e. presence of Italian-made guns is a reminder of colonial days).

I might be wrong, but is that even a real Beretta? I've seen blank-firing replicas which have that same finish (blued with gold controls). It could also be a regionally-produced copy, but not sure.

I wouldn't go to say that those weapons are useless. "ancient", yeah but a gun is a gun and if it shoots bullets and won't blow up in my face, I'll take it...unless it's like an old musket.

The article says they don't really have any bullets and/or mags for alot if the guns

k9870 04-21-2011 10:43 PM

They are getting their asses kicked.

Mandolin1 04-22-2011 01:51 AM

I'd love the rebels to win, but any rebel group that can't "liberate" an airfield, tank depot, or armory (esprecialy the armory) in the first day deserves to lose. They don't have to hold the place, just take what you can and wreck the rest.

funkychinaman 04-22-2011 05:46 AM

Well, the president said we're in this until Gaddafi is out. So if the rebels are getting their asses kicked, and president wants to follow through, you can see where this is going.

On the plus side, we already have lots of equipment in the region.

funkychinaman 04-22-2011 05:52 AM

Chris Hondros' final pictures were published. It looks like they're mainly just using AKs for actually fighting, which makes sense. There's also an FAL in one of the photos.

He was a brave man and he will not be forgotten.

k9870 04-22-2011 12:16 PM

Ghadaffi is bad but the rebels may not be better, there is no one rebel movememnt though. One leader says "we want peace and democracy" another says "we need sharia law" then anopther says "society needs to be more tribal."

Remember when the rebels took british soldiers hostage? Bad move.

Were those rebels? I thought that was government forces.

k9870 04-22-2011 01:52 PM

I was rebels took a diploamat and his sas guards hostage for about a day. Early march i think.

I cant believe he went in a burning building during a gunfight.

Interesting, but not particularly useful. I'm not sure how much those weapons are representative of the broader rebel inventory. Most pics I've seen show the rebels armed with the same types of small arms as Qaddafi's forces - AKs, RPGs, PKs, etc.

Either way, the quality of small arms used by either side is not going to be the decisive factor in this conflict. It never is.

Without sounding like I'm supporting the rebels (because I am skeptical of this intervention), almost all rebel groups aren't particularly competent at conventional warfare. Even groups that receive outside training from the U.S. still manage to suck balls due to lack of discipline in the rank-and-file, and (most importantly) lack of popular support in the areas that they're trying to control. In Afghanistan, the Northern Alliance was barely able to hold onto their territory (let alone take Kabul) before we bombed the Taliban to help put them in power. And the KLA was pretty much down for the count before we chased Serbian forces out of Kosovo for them in '99.

I think you are right. It looks like a Voltran Ekol select fire, full/semi auto replica. The switch for the select fire is bunched up next to the takedown lever, and it also has the little bit of scrollwork on the frame in front of the trigger guard. They are made in turkey, and in russia and the like they are self defense guns that fire rubber bullets.
