I'm just wondering how lazy this guy has to be to need a bot to remove spaces.

Well he's banned. Maybe he'll just stay gone when the month is over. If not and he returns to his old ways - well i guess we'll cross that bridge if we come to it.

Well, the original purpose of the bot was pretty sound (it does automatic spellchecking, and automating basic fixes to hundreds of articles rather than doing it by hand is a good idea), the problem is you can't trust a few lines of code to deal with the structure of a page. And that he shouldn't have started running a mass-editing bot without consulting people about what it should be editing.

So basically we have him banned for

A: Makeing major changes without asking the rest of the Wiki.

B: useing a bot that isn't set up for the needs of the forum thus doing alot of potential damage.

Sometimes I wish we aren't a wiki site where others can come in and freely register and do whatever they want

I think it's more of using a bot to make indiscriminate changes. Theoretically, isn't the point of a wiki peer editing?
