New Admin nominations?

Hi all,

First, thank you to those who sent me PMs asking how I was doing (you know who you are). I appreciate your concern, and this post will hopefully answer your questions. :)

As most of you have probably noticed, I am not on IMFDB all that much lately, even though I was once a very prolific and active user. There are two reasons for this:

(1.) I have been very busy finishing my Master's, applying to Ph.D programs, searching for jobs, and doing other research. I successfully defended my M.A. thesis in December, but remain preoccupied with the other tasks. No job interviews yet (besides a couple of Skype conferences), but I've spent a lot of time going back and forth to D.C., re-connecting with people from school and meeting new contacts.

(2.) I got engaged in January, and will be getting married at the end of June. My (now) fiancee and I moved into a new loft apartment recently, and we were very busy settling in and buying new furniture. I also wound up selling my Mossberg 500 Mariner and a Ruger Mark II (don't worry - it was just to finance the purchase of our bedroom suite; I'm not about to sell any of my other hardware, in case you guys were worried that I've done a complete 180. ;) )

Long story short, I'm way too busy to fulfill my regular duties on IMFDB. So...I am once again seeking to find new Administrators. Mostly, I am looking for people to nominate for Admin status on the forum, which means that you would be in charge of activating new forum members' accounts. I am (at present) the only person besides Bunni who has forum Admin status; I have received a large number of requests to approve new member accounts, and have not fulfilled any of these requests yet (because I neither know how nor have the time to figure it out). Since I am on IMFDB so rarely that I am unfamiliar with who's who and who's been doing the most work, I figured that I should seek your input on who to nominate. You guys know who you like and respect, and since some of you have previously suggested that we make the nomination process a little more democratic, I've decided to listen.

Therefore, I would appreciate it if you would all post in this topic and include the following:

(1.) Up to 3 people (no more) who you believe deserve Administrator status on the main site and Moderator status on the forum.

(2.) Up to 2 people (no more) - preferably current forum Moderators (not members who hold no staff positions) - who will serve as forum Administrator. Remember that unlike Mods, forum Admins get to approve new users, which means that they get more control over the board settings than regular Mods.

There's only one rule: Please do NOT nominate yourself. Even if you believe you're the right person for the job, I would rather hear it from your peers.

Thanks, guys.

Who are our current Mods and Admins? I remember someone posting a link to a list a long while back

predator20 02-07-2012 08:05 PM

Congratulations Matt. Don't forget to visit sometime though. :)

Nominations. main site,

http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/User:Funkychinaman He's real active.
http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/User:Zackmann08 He hasn't been here as long as some others, but he does a shit load of work. A lot of it, most don't like doing. Converting list to table etc.

Those are two I can think of right now, they're several others worthy of a nom.

funkychinaman 02-07-2012 08:24 PM

Congratulations!

SPEMack618 02-07-2012 11:00 PM

I'll second the nomination of both of the above.

Funkychinaman has an excellent presence on the board and it seems that every time I log in that Zackmann has recently updated another article of some sort.

Spartan198 02-08-2012 08:59 PM

I'll third the two nominations above.

Sergei Titov 02-09-2012 05:31 AM

I would really like to be an admin for the Chuck Pages. I slave over those because I LOVEEEEE that show. Chuck > Life.... Chuck = My Life O.o
My main site name is Sergei Titov :p

bunni 02-09-2012 05:56 AM

I'm keeping an eye on this thread... this would not be the first time funkychinaman has been nominated... (:

Yournamehere 02-09-2012 09:19 AM

I'd nominate predator20 for Forum Admin. He's always reasonable, kind to users and knowledgeable about the site and firearms in general.

I'd also nominate Excalibur for Forum Admin since he's on frequently and can handle approving users.

It doesn't work like that. You're either an admin for the whole wiki, or you're not an admin.

Congrats, engagement would be scary to me but you seem to be happy and having a nice new place is always cool.

SERIOUSLY?! I've only been here for like 3 months. I'd be honored if you guys wanted to make me an admin but either way know this... I will always defer to my superiors. Making me an admin or forum moderator wouldn't change that. I still have a lot to learn and will continue to seek advice and guidance from the current admins and senior members. Thanks for considering me. :-)

As for Funkychinaman, couldn't agree more! Guys been helping me out a lot lately.

And MT2008... Freaking congrats man! Hope the married life treats you well. I concur with Predator's statement... Don't forget to come visit from time to time.

-Zack

I nominate whoever will zap these damn spammers.

Evil Tim 02-12-2012 07:58 AM

I'd say give Zackmann08 a few more months, no offence to him but he's still asking newbie questions from time to time. In the meantime, Bozitojugg3rn4ut, Commando552, PistolJunkie and Bednardos are all good users who contribute a lot to the site and know how to make pages.

Also, is there any reason why the existing site admins aren't forum admins too? I'd have thought if we were trusted not to bugger things up out there we'd be trusted not to do it in here, too.

That may be best, give him a few more months. I will second Commando552.

Other than Bunni and Matt, most others are moderators on the forum. Though our title might just say senior member.

Ironically, i will third this notion. As much as i would love to be an admin, i want to earn it. Evil Tim is right. I'm still learning here. I hope in a few months when the next round of nominations come up, my name will be thrown back in the hat. :)

zackmann08 02-20-2012 08:57 PM

The one thing I will say on my own behalf, is that it would be great to be able to help update some of the pages that only admins can access... Such as the "Featured Article" page that I've been helping Ben41 with. IF I was lucky enough to be made an admin, I would restrict myself to only doing stuff like deleting spam pages. If I wasn't 100% sure of what I was doing, I would ask. Just to belay EvilTim's very valid point that I'm still learning here.

:)

I actually think it wouldn't be a bad idea to have an additional "trusted user" level between regular editors and admins. This'd be for the guys we know are reliable, and with normal user rights plus access to the multiple image uploader, the rollback function, and the ability to edit protected pages.

I thought everyone already had access to multiple image upload and undo.

Unless Bunni's changed it, you don't have an option below "forum" in the sidebar saying "Upload multiple files" unless you're an admin. Rollback is different to undo; it's a one-click undo which undoes everything back to the previous person who edited the page (so, for example, it undoes all 7 of Andy's edits and returns the page to the last one by Bob). Only problem is you can't give rollbacks an edit reason since they're done just by clicking the "rollback" text.

He must have changed it then, since I have the "Upload Multiple Files" link on the sidebar.

And I think I've done a rollback before.

If you had rollback rights it'd look like this:

Do you see those?

Then no. I thought it was the same as reverting to previous revisions. Functionally, wouldn't that be the same?

I could be wrong, but I believe rollback not only reverts an edit, but also deletes it from the page history. At least, that's what I remember it doing when I became an admin at the Clash of the Titans wiki and started rebuilding it.

No, that's what I thought it did, but it doesn't (which is lucky since I've hit it a few times by mistake while checking recent changes on my phone). Mainly it's just a convenience thing, you can revert all of a vandal's edits right from the recent changes list (or anywhere else) with one click rather than having to dig up the last diff, hit edit and then hit save.

No, that's Revision Delete. It's slightly different.

Yeah, and we don't have it. Only way for an admin to get rid of page revisions with our current software is to delete the entire page and then remake it.

I don't have it on a wiki I'm an admin on either; but then only certain staffers do there.

MT2008 03-02-2012 02:07 AM

Alright, so after watching this topic for a while, it sounds like Funkychinaman and Commando552 are ideal candidates for main site admins. As for Zachmann, I would be OK with him getting the nomination if the rest of y'all feel the same way (though I saw some express a little apprehension). Zach, I will most definitely re-visit the matter in a few months if nothing else - you seem like admin material to me.

As for forum admins, how about Predator20 and Excalibur?

MT2008 03-02-2012 02:11 AM

Don't mean to make this topic too much about me, but...

As recently as a year ago, I didn't think this was what I wanted...at all. I didn't want to even think about marriage before I was 30, and I figured the most likely age that I'd get married was in my mid-30s.

:) I look forward to the revisit. In the mean time, let me know how else I can be helpful.

I was engaged at the age of twenty, married at 23. Still married 21 years later. I never thought I would follow a path taken by so many men in the 1950's. But I did and it's been okay. Actually I have known my wife for more than half of my life. That's something to think about.
