Can this be done?

I was wondering, would it be possible to mount an M203 grenade launcher on an Armalite AR-10-series rifle or carbine? That way you had the stopping power and longer range of the 7.62x51mm NATO round and the anti-materiel capability of the M203 all in one package. Just a random thought I had. While we're on the subject, is it possible to convert an AR-10 to auto or burst mode like with an AR-15?

The original ar-10 was full auto, and an m203 can be mounted.

But the original AR-10 is definately not the same gun as today's AR-10. And if the AR-10 has a picatinny rail and a barrel stepping (like on 16" carbine A4 models) then I suppose you could fit an M203. But AR-10s aren't issued to military and you can't own a M203 without a destructive device liscense (and in my case, I can't even buy the fake Cobray flare launchers, because flare guns are banned in NY :P) so it seems like a slim chance this is a neccesary modification.

I believe the OP is more interested in it being a possible infantry weapon. Aren't m203s attached by some type of rail system?

Gunmaster45 06-05-2009 02:26 AM

That's what I mean by picatinny rails. The rails attached to the bottom of the forend attach the base of the launcher and a mounting ring is wrapped around the barrel, which fits in place because of the stepping in the barrel (that's why barrels for guns like M4A1s have that increase/decrease in barrel thickness).

P.S. 666 post! oooooooh.....

Are the current production Armalite AR-10s really that different from the AR-15 internally? Both guns are, caliber aside, more or less the same weapon. I would imagine that most sears that fit in AR-15s would fit in -10s. And I'm guessing that the methods used to render AR-10s as semi-auto are the same that differentiate the AR-15 from the M16 (re-designed bolt carrier, narrow bolt carrier channel, filled in rear lower receiver).

And an M203 would be an easy fit as well, I imagine. The sleeve that fits an M16A2 with 20" barrel should work fine, but if not, the M203A2 would work just as well with RAS kit (and I know I've seen that available for AR-10s).

I am, of course, talking out of intuition.

Heck MT,

When I get out of California I am planning to get a G-3KA4 with a quality Rail forend just so I can mount a short barreled RIS M-203 on it. Yeah it's a real hollywood combination but heck I've lived for way too long in this messed up state.

A G3 with an M203 attached? That's an ugly combo. You've been playing too much COD4

So by a PTR-91, class 3 a short barrel, slap on a 37mm flare launcher, and have a truly seless bt cool looking weapon?
