No, sorry, I got that backwards.

For the two of you out there who actually watched Battleship. Can you reactivate the Missouri?

SPEMack618 05-23-2012 07:03 PM

Well, first off, I am not a comic fan boy by any stretch of the imagination, so that being said, I may have been a bit underwhelmed due to lack of knowledge.

However, Captain Rogers had no 1911, the conflicts between the characters seemed forced, the resolution of Hawkeye being brainwashed seemed contrite, and the whole underlying tension between the Avengers just seemed forced as well. That being said I still enjoyed it.

Excalibur 05-23-2012 08:29 PM

I like the character development between the main guys. I didn't however like how Hawkeye got taken from the good guys almost at the start of the movie and then almost at the end of the movie was brought back. I was hoping we see more of him in action but not as a mind controlled bad guy.

I didn't like how the stand off scene where it ended with Banner holding the staff was going. It seemed like no one was questioning why they were suddenly at each other's throats and why they stopped arguing when it was over.

It was nice to see Captain America pick up a gun and shoot however brief that was. If we look at the context of just the movie character without the knowledge of the comics, we do wonder why Captain America stopped using a gun especially brought into battle where aliens are shooting at him. It just doesn't seem to work when in one movie he used a gun and another he stopped. I was hoping for scenes of him being amazed at how firearms have advanced since he was asleep.

And I still found it odd that Black Widow went into battle against an alien invasion with just 2 Glocks and not full size Glocks, subcompact Glocks. In the comics, she uses full size assault rifles on occasion. One issue cover had her posing with a FAL. I would of loved to see that in the movie.

In the comics Hawkeye was trained by Captain America, but that was the original story

funkychinaman 05-24-2012 12:16 AM

G.I. Joe 2 pushed back.

SPEMack618 05-24-2012 01:53 AM

Yeah the movie seemed way to angsty for my tastes.

k9870 05-24-2012 02:14 AM

I just watched Avengers awesome throughout sure the hawkeye thing was annoying and could have been done better but it was awesome.

S&Wshooter 05-28-2012 12:07 AM

Men In Black 3 was pretty good; better than the second one, in my opinion. We made the mistake of seeing it in 3D, though, which was just a waste of money (I didn't even really notice the 3D)

We ran by HEB afterwards to pick up a few things, and I snagged Open Range off of the impulse rack while checking out

Excalibur 05-29-2012 02:53 PM

Just saw MIB 3 and it was good for the most part, especially the ending and Josh Brolin playing young K. But it seems like the characters didn't age well or grew up for the most part. Will Smith is trying to act like he acted in the 90s with Agent J and a lot of the jokes in the beginning just aren't that funny.

We also see a bunch of Kris TDI Vectors in an armory

Also watching Hatfields & McCoys. Someone want to do this series?

funkychinaman 05-30-2012 02:49 PM

Yay, more Channing Tatum...

Excalibur 05-30-2012 04:29 PM

So apparently Tatum's character died but now that they pushed the movie back, they want to not kill him off?

I guess? I didn't see much of Duke in the trailers, and that was my first thought when I saw the trailer: what happened to the rest of the team? I can see them doing *A* G.I. Joe movie without Duke, but if you've already established him as a character, how do you go kill him off? It's Duke! And I presume they killed off Scarlett as well.

commando552 05-30-2012 04:53 PM

I wouldn't have thought they are stopping him from getting killed off, the whole point of the movie from what I can tell is that all the Joes have been killed apart from the main cast. If they wanted him to survive they would have to reshoot a lot and I don't know why they would bother, especially as Tatum is just as likely to drive people away than bring them in. I think more likely they will be expanding his role before the attack on the Joes, which is probably more of an editing thing rather than reshoots. Besides, it doesn't take 9 months to change it to not kill off Duke, all you need to do is redub it to say that the snake speared through his chest just put him into a coma and have someone say "Duke woke up!" at the end of the movie and everyone cheer. ;)

Holy crap I hope they do that. That would be the greatest bit of fan service ever.

BeardedHoplite 06-19-2012 01:51 PM

I finally saw Act of Valor (on blu-ray!). I can appreciate the message it wants to send, but I really thought the action scenes were just average. Like, Heat's were better.

Excalibur 06-19-2012 06:44 PM

Well it isn't hollywood action scenes. They wanted it to be as authentic as possible with the real SEALs thing

zackmann08 06-19-2012 06:56 PM

What I thought was interesting was that there were a few things that happened where I was like "yea right... like that would EVER happen"... Like the SEAL getting hit with the RPG that didn't detonate. I assumed that they just wanted it to be dramatic and exaggerated it a bit. Turns out, that ACTUALLY FUCKING HAPPENED!!!

k9870 06-19-2012 08:31 PM

I loved act of valor's action. I love heat but i dont think its the pinnacle of movie shootouts like people make it out to be. The realism of act of valor made it just truly awesome.

But that was really all the movie had going for it, I mean, the acting was rotten and the plot irrevelent. It was just a bunch of weaksauce action bits (which over-relied on the FPS view, imho).

There are three reasons an RPG could potentially not detonate. One, it was a dudd. Two, it was within the minimum arming distance of the RPG. Three, the fuze on an RPG is designed to detonate when it hits a solid armoured vehicle as opposed to a person, which is a fairly "soft" target. I think this has actually happened a few times, you have the Ranger who was killed by being impaled by an RPG in Somalia (as shown in Black Hawk Down), at least a couple of US soldier who have survived being hit by non detonating RPGs (one in the leg and one in the pelvis for sure, probably others), and there was a British Para officer who got hit in the front plate of his body armour by an RPG during an ambush which didn't detonate and he was basically fine. Also, I personally know a British Royal Marine who had an RPG hit the top of his helmet, and cartwheel off before the time fuze went off about 10 meters behind him. He got a concussion and didn't remember it, but he needed A LOT of alcohol to calm him down when it was explained to him what had happened.

Plot wasn't a problem, what were you epecting bond villains with lazer sharks or some crap? Plot was realistic.

Acting wasnt as bad as its made out to be, itwasnt good but didnt need to be, it just had to keep the plot in motion

This was the reason it didn't detonate. The guy fired it from about 5 or 6 feet away, well within the warhead's 1300 meter arming radius.

Arming range on a Russian spec RPG is about 5-10 meters, so if he was only 5 or 6 feet away it probably would not have detonated. The arming distance thing varied a lot by the country it was manufactured in though, with some being armed pretty much as soon as they are launched.

I saw the new trailer for Dredd. Looks pretty sweet. And it looks waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than that god awful Stallone adaptation.

He's not bashing the Avengers, he's just frustrated that he had to go up against an over-hyped movie that was four years in the making that actually delivered on the hype.

Excalibur 06-27-2012 02:28 AM

Today I saw Brave and Abe Lincoln Vampire hunter.

The Pixar movie was good. A pretty simple plot about a teen princess who wants her way getting along with her uptight mom and throw in some magical bears in the story

Abe Lincoln is actually pretty good. It is a basic plot about a young protege who wants revenge on someone for killing his family and the guy turns out to be a vampire, he then gets trained by a master "hunter" who turns out to be a vampire himself and we get allegories to slavery throughout human history how that inspired Abe to change US policies involving slavery even though the Civil War wasn't entirely about slavery but in the movie, the war ended up being a proxy war between Abe and the Vampire Nation in America.

The big message in the movie is obviously equality of all men even though from a historical standpoint it didn't change racism at all and Abe still ended up getting killed at the theater even though if you think about it, super Abe shoulda seen Booth coming at him if he was such a bad ass. Oh and he has a black partner throughout the movie for that whole equality message.

funkychinaman 06-28-2012 01:28 AM

Argh...

I thought I read that they were going with Kevin McKidd on this. He would've been great. Real Scotsman, handy with a sword. If not Kevin McKidd, why not Gerard Butler, another real Scotsman, handy with a sword. Or even James MacAvoy, real Scotsman, slightly less handy with a sword. But to go with a Canadian who's also box office poison? WTF?

Get Mads Mikkelsen, Live Schreiber, or somebody that can rival Clancy Brown as the Kurgan, and it'll probably be bearable.

Five years ago, I would've gone with Gerard Butler as Connor MacLeod, Christopher Lambert as Ramirez, and Russell Crowe as the Kurgan. Now, everyone's a little too old.

Clancy Brown is the voice of Mr. Krabs on Spongebob. That blows my mind.

That would at least continue the Highlander tradition of having the audience wonder why the Spanish-Egyptian guy has a Scottish accent but not the Scottish guy.

To be fair, the character has been around the planet since the time of the Egyptians and he's most likely picked up so much culture and language that he can sound like whatever he wants
