Well, I also gots a Norinco '97 clone and a Jenning J-22.
And I could probably hit up my sister for twenty bucks. So do you have a camera and a five spot? |
I rented a Glock 19 and a Springfield M1911 at the range this weekend and tried both out. I'm leaning towards the Glock 19 for next purchase, and wow, the Springfield is a sight to behold. I totally get why some people are totally enamored with the M1911.

Attack of the Giant SQUIRRELOPUS
|
C'mon, you know y'all want to help make Attack of the Giant Squirrelopus
|
I'm thinking that we could shang-hai my sister into being the leading lady.
And I've got enough assorted web gear and fishing vests to outfit a small militia. |
Well, I'm not sure I can help you guys out with Attack of the Giant Squirrelopus, but I did end up finally testing out my BHP. Ran flawlessly with my handloads, and was dead accurate, so I'm happy. Also, since this is in the gun purchases thread, I have a bunch of reloading equipment and a 6" S&W 19-5 for sale on GunBroker. My username is Mengtx if anyone is interested. Just thought some of you would want a jump on the current craziness.
|
Bud, if I had the money, that Model 19 would be looking at Three Person's holsters already.
|
Finally got around to using my camera.

Lately I've developed a greater appreciation for the S&W semi-autos. Especially the 2nd and 3rd Generation models. Probably becasue S&W has almost stopped making them in favor of the M&P. I think I have a thing for discontinued models. It's a sickness. Very nice AdAstra2009.

I just traded my Winchester 1300 Defender to my father for his Ruger Redhawk
|
Smith & Wesson 915, basically a budget 5904. Would have liked to have gotten one with matching controls. But they were bought up within the first few hours of listing. $240 shipped, I'll do a better assessment when it arrives. Already got extra mags.

I would've liked to have found a 659, but prices have gone up on just about every handgun that holds over 10 rounds. The dealer had about 10 of those 915's, sold them all in about two days. Quote:

Picked up the 915 today. Real pleased with it for the price I paid. Gave it a mild cleaning, it's ready to rock. I do plan a picking up a spring kit just to be on the safe side.

So the barrel on that Redhawk has a noticeable cant to the right....

I also just picked up a CETME Sporter, I'll post pics later. |
I'm going to a crawfish boil at my cousin's house, so I'm going to be asking her husband about buying all that Norinco 7.62x39mm he has laying around. His father actually brought back a Type 56 from Vietnam, and after he died his friend got it but didn't take the ammo for whatever reason

About the spring kits, the one thing I love about the S&W classic autos is that the frames are super easy to strip. The wraparound grip was a really ingenious idea since it made replacing the mainspring easier, on top of eliminating 11 parts from the whole design. Enjoy your new gun and let us know how you feel about it after the range. |
wheres all the damn ammo

A few of my friends are all getting their CCW permits this week. Hopefully I'll be able to join them in a few months.

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2...1-carbine-9mm/
I've always wanted an M1 Carbine, but I haven't really pursued it because until recently, I lived in a state that banned them by name, and I've been worried about the availability of ammo. I'm a bit torn on this. 9mm is relatively cheap and plentiful, but at the same time, you lose a lot in terms of stopping power and range. |
9mm isn't a weak round. Also enough rounds in the chest and the man's down. A good hollow point 9mm is just as effective as high caliber rounds. The range of a 9mm really depends on the gun that's shooting it and how good of a shooter you are.

If you push hot 9mm loads through a carbine length barrel, you're bound to get significant ballistic improvements. .30 Carbine still has a longer case and more powder potential, and yes, it was designed from the ground up to be a carbine cartridge, but 9mm is cheaper and will fit in all of your handguns too.
If I were to get a pistol caliber carbine, I'd like to get a levergun in .357 Magnum. You get all of the cool from owning a lever action rifle, with better ballistic performance than 9mm or some other pistol caliber, and you still have interchangeability of ammunition if you own revolvers. M1 Carbines are really cool guns too, and you can get 30 round mags for them, the only problem with them is the proprietary and costly nature of the ammo in my eyes. |
A while ago, I picked up one with a synthetic stock and it had a thinner grip so people with smaller hands can fully grasp it. I've always found the wood stock to be a bit thick to hold onto and I've got pretty big hands.

I may go for the lever action. At least I don't have to worry about some politician ever going after them. |
