RIP Mikhail Kalashnikov

"AK-47. The very best there is. When you absolutely, positively got to kill every motherfucker in the room, accept no substitutes."

I'm a bit torn between the above quote and General Patton calling the M1 Garand "the greatest battle implement ever devised" as the greatest compliment a gun can receive. Sure, one is Patton, but the other is Samuel L. Jackson at his Samuel L. Jackson-est.

>Mikhail Kalashnikov dies

>Honor him with a quote from a rubbish film that is spoken by a character who is characterized as being wholly un-knowledgeable about guns

I don't mean to offend, but I had to point out that bit of irony. Anyway, yes, he has finally passed. Rest in Peace (through superior firepower, of course), comrade Kalashnikov.

Jackie Brown certainly isn't among Tarantino's best, but I would hardly consider it a bad film.

Lord of War is where it's at for quotes about the AK:

"Of all the weapons in the vast soviet arsenal, nothing was more profitable than Avtomat Kalashnikova model of 1947. More commonly known as the AK-47, or Kalashnikov. It's the world's most popular assault rifle. A weapon all fighters love. An elegantly simple 9 pound amalgamation of forged steel and plywood. It doesn't break, jam, or overheat. It'll shoot whether it's covered in mud or filled with sand. It's so easy, even a child can use it; and they do. The Soviets put the gun on a coin. Mozambique put it on their flag. Since the end of the Cold War, the Kalashnikov has become the Russian people's greatest export. After that comes vodka, caviar, and suicidal novelists. One thing is for sure, no one was lining up to buy their cars."

"I wanted to invent an engine that could run for ever. I could have developed a new train, had I stayed in the railway. It would have looked like the AK-47 though." - Mikhail Kalashnikov

RIP

A man loyal to not the politics but to his country.

Maybe this isn't the best time to point this out, but Mikhail Kalashnikov was not just a Russian patriot; he was a hardcore Marxist-Leninist. He's been quoted as saying that he regrets never knowing Stalin personally - which is ironic, since he lost family members to Stalin. He's also written books where he said stuff like this:

Quote:

At that time in our country patenting inventions wasn't an issue. We worked for Socialist society, for the good of the people, which I never regret.
Quote:

After the collapse of the great and mighty Soviet Union so much crap has been imposed on us, especially on the younger generation...I wrote six books to help them find their way in life.
I also find it rather strange that he claimed indifference to receiving no royalties from AK production, yet complained in the same breath about the AK design being copied by everyone. I think such complaints stand in contradiction to his claims about inventing the AK-47 out of a sense of patriotism.

I don't think anyone here is in the wrong for admiring Kalashnikov's ingenuity and his impact on history, but let's not lie to ourselves: The man's values and beliefs were simply abhorrent.
