Still getting one

I spoke (slightly) in jest in my last post, but RE replacement parts: Already did. I guess the main issue is that after a while, it starts to feel like a money pit when I spend as much as I have on parts.

I'm sure it will run fine for many years to come, but if I ever buy another Gen 2 Glock, I'll probably buy one that was a safe queen (like my Gen 2 -17). I don't ever wanna have to spend so much money on a used handgun again.

MT2008 12-18-2019 01:54 AM

Also, despite the fact that I have spent way too much money on guns this year (mostly due to the money I've spent on my DD M4A1, plus two different optics), I'm already buying another AR. This time, I'm getting a BCM.

S&Wshooter 12-19-2019 04:55 AM

I, regrettably, am unable to stop myself from purchasing a 5906 after the beginning of the year. Can't not, have to have it; I tried shooting other guns and 3rd gen S&Ws are It, no use fighting fate.

Also I got a dot for my AR (just a Romeo), a new extractor for my horrible Ruger .40, and am rebuilding my stock of .22, .357, and .308 because the stash I lost during the cleanup after Harvey was located.....after being flooded during Imelda

Well if you're going to just accept your fate you'll be in good company. The 3rd Gen S&W autos are good pistols. Many still don't appreciate them and that's just fine with me.

S&Wshooter 12-23-2019 03:17 AM

I mean I've been shooting a 4506 since like 2010, and have had a whole mess of all 3 gens of S&W auto. Let me think about all of them from over the last 9 years....

39-2
459
645
915 (given to my dad as a gift because his Kimber is really just terrible)
6906 (sold to pay for textbooks)
4506-1

MT2008 12-24-2019 02:06 PM

Christmas came early for me: My BCM upper and lower both arrived on Saturday. I also got my BUIS in the mail yesterday. Setup is not complete yet, but I expect that once everything has arrived, the final config will look like this:

- BCM MK2 BFH Enhanced Lightweight upper w/ 14.5” barrel, MCMR-13 handguard, and BCM Mod 1 compensator
- BCM lower w/ Gunfighter Mod 0 SOPMOD stock
- EOTech EXPS-3
- BCM stubby vertical grip
- Scalarworks front sight
- Magpul MBUS Pro rear sight
- Blue Force Gear VCAS sling

I’m still waiting on my sling and some rail covers to arrive in the mail. My setup is inspired pretty heavily by the one that Larry Vickers uses, and features one of BCM’s new MK2 upper receivers (just released this month), which Vickers Tactical has been demo’ing in prototype form for the past two years. The main differences between my setup and LAV’s is that I run an EOTech (instead of an Aimpoint) and an MCMR (M-LOK) forearm instead of KMR (Keymod). Oh, and I’m not sure yet whether I’ll run a light on this build, but I’m pretty sure I won’t mount it in the 12:00 position.

Spartan198 12-25-2019 01:37 AM

Why people still use Keymod when given their choice is beyond me.

At least with BCM, one of the incentives for choosing their Keymod rails over their M-LOK rails is that they offer far more accessories for Keymod. (I discovered this oddity when I was searching their site and found that the vert grip I wanted for my rifle wasn’t available for M-LOK, only Picatinny and Keymod.) I find this to be a sleazy practice on their part; I wonder if Vltor (which invented Keymod, and also manufactures parts for BCM) has some sort of deal with BCM to push Keymod on their customers.

All things considered, Keymod isn’t really that bad. I know it didn’t hold up as well as M-LOK in NSWC Crane’s drop tests, but since I don’t plan to drop my AR from 5 stories up or run it over with my car, I’m not too concerned about that. I actually think the attachment system is a little more intuitive than M-LOK (as I discovered when I first started putting accessories on my MCMR rail). It’s mostly just ugly; I didn’t want my AR to look like it was furnished by IKEA, which is why I got an M-LOK rail.

An old style Charter Arms Undercover, pachmayrs for said Charter, and a new ejector rod head for it. I got it way cheap at Cabelas via gift card & 10% off sale

MT2008 12-29-2019 09:02 PM

Here's my new BCM rifle:

Here are some close-ups of the new BCM MK2 upper receiver, which I mentioned in my previous post. The main differences between this upper and the standard mil-spec flattop uppers is that it has a built-up portion on the left side, more material around the ejection port, and a shorter forward assist - supposedly, it's stronger than a standard upper, but weighs about the same.

Getting closer to my first AK purchase. I'm getting a Krink style

Jcordell 01-18-2020 08:55 PM

The new Python. No it isn't the same as the old one and it never will be. I own several older Colt DA revolvers to include an early Colt 3-5-7 (mine was manufactured in 1955), which is the Python minus the famous fluted barrel and Royal Blue finish. I'm okay with a new one that looks like it's ancestor, but is a product of modern engineering and technology.

There have been a few glitches with the first new Pythons to be sent out by Colt. The Colt haters are all over it, but I suspect that the first 1,000 were sent out as a type of testing. What nobody is talking about is that Colt has been contacted and will make good the necessary corrections. One of the reasons why I don't buy a new gun until it's has time to be rung out by others. Funny how the critics are forgetting the troubles that Ruger (P85), Smith & Wesson (586/686), Kimber and Glock (Gen 4 or Gen 5....I can't remember which iteration) all had at the beginning as well. Of course $1,499 is a hefty price and people aren't wrong to expect perfection. Also, Colt has done much over the past thirty-five years to earn such bad feelings. Regardless I have sold a couple guns and I have the money to purchase one. I'm hoping that by this summer I'll be able to get hold of one and the mechanical issues will have been worked out.

I'll be looking to see if Colt addresses the mechanical glitches (cylinder not revolving and nick and dings at the muzzle) at the SHOT show. I'll also be paying attention to what happens over the next few months. If it continues to be a problem then I suppose I'll buy something else. Hopefully Colt will have a lasting fix.

This guy flaked, so S&W 5906 soon and maybe a Rossi M88. I just got 4 more mags (2 aftermarket for less than the cost of one garbage Pro-Mag, 2 factory for basically the price of 1) for my 459 that'll work in it. I also found a guy on gunbroker selling the Mec Gar 15s for like 18 a pop, will probably hit them up soon

Jcordell 05-06-2020 09:29 PM

Got my eye on a Smith & Wesson 4513TSW (45 ACP - six shot magazine). It's one of the ones made from 97-99 and doesn't have the integral rail. It's in excellent shape, comes with three magazines and the original blue S&W case. I'll be bidding on it (estate auction) in a couple weeks. We shall see.

Decided to just get a 5906, found one in good shape with the arched xenoy grips (just switched my 4506 to use a similar set) and Novak sights. I also found a guy on gunbroker selling brand new Mec Gars cheap so am stocking up; I'm going to take this influx of new mags to send some older ones my father's way, for his 915

I'm always looking for original S&W mags and I've jumped a couple times when I've found Mec Gars mags for sale as well. Few months ago I found two 4516-1 mags for sale. The owner was asking $35.00 for the pair and the price wasn't negotiable. I paid it.

IIRC that's less than what one goes for usually. Just a few weeks ago I got 2 OEM 14 round 5900 mags for $40, and 2 aftermarkets for $17. I'm going to give my 15 round Mec Gar and a 15 round OEM to my father for his 915, loaded with good hollowpoints

It was a good deal. One of the reasons why I didn't haggle. The seller of those mags knew what he was doing though. His second job (he is also a police officer at a nearby agency) is selling accoutrements for firearms. It wasn't a bad price and I've seen genuine single S&W 3rd Gen mags go for significantly higher prices. Besides we get along.

A couple months ago I sold my WWII era M1 carbine to him. Manufactured in 43 by the National Postal Meter Company it had been modified with the bayonet lug and so forth. Also, while in good shape, it was imported back into the states from S. Korea in the eighties. All factors that would hold down it's re-sale value. He paid me $650 for it and sold it to a guy who had been wanting an M1 carbine for awhile. I suspect that the buyer wasn't real discriminating, but he won't tell me what he sold it for. I'm sure he did okay though.

I guess the saying that it isn't what you know but who is true. I've told him to keep me in my mind during his travels and that I will make it worth his while to pick up S&W 2/3rd Gen 45ACP mags.

S&Wshooter 05-22-2020 03:55 AM

The guy un-flaked, and has a Browning BDA .380 I want bad along with a pile of revolvers (and Colt 1911's that I don't really care about)

Jcordell 05-22-2020 04:06 AM

Won this 4513TSW (pre-rail) tonight at auction. My winning bide was $500. I was able to check it out a few weeks ago and it's in fine condition. It will go nicely with my 4586 and 4516-1. Smith only made this version of the 4513TSW from 97-99. When production resumed in 2000 it had the light rail. It comes with three S&W magazines and the carrying case. I'll be getting it tomorrow, but here a few photos courtesy of the auction company. I'm getting hooked on the 3rd Gen autos. Didn't appreciate them when they were still in production, but I wouldn't have been able to afford them back then even if I had. In the nineties we were young parents with student loans to repay. So now I'm trying to rectify that.

I shot my 5906 today, it's just like my 4506 but "easier". Better get those .45 mags while you can, I'm sure they'll get exponentially harder to find at some point in the near future; I still grab any I see, and am set to hoard 5900 mags in case Mec Gar stops making them (https://www.gunbroker.com/item/869197474 cheapest/easiest I've found bc the guy has tons and doesn't try to rip you off on shipping; I just bought 4 of his 17 rounders). I have 11 4500 mags, definitely will get more

Jealous!

A friend of a friend's brother just sold me a pair of surplus FAL mags for the cost of shipping

MT2008 07-10-2020 06:42 PM

Not a real gun, but here's my latest purchase: With all the years that I've been an IMFDB member, and my longstanding interest in movie guns, I suppose it's a surprise that I didn't do this sooner, but I finally bought a screen-used rubber prop gun from Propstore. Specifically, I bought a Steyr SPP that was used in "Stratton":

https://propstore.com/product/stratton/steyr-spp-gun/

(Propstore still lists this weapon for sale, so I'm guessing that they either haven't updated the site yet to reflect that I bought it, or they have more than one SPP in inventory.)

I've thought about getting a screen-used rubber gun from Propstore for a while, but often, those things are pricey (sometimes as much as real guns), especially if used by one of the movie's stars. And since I'd rather spend my money on real guns, it's usually hard for me to motivate myself to buy something fake like this - same reason I don't buy airsoft guns anymore. But, I've always been curious to find out what these rubber guns are like, and once Propstore knocked down the price by 50%, I figured I'd spend a little money to find out. (Though even a rubber gun listed at $69 costs a LOT more with shipping from the U.K.)

I'll post pictures later on once I have a chance. Side note: Did anyone see where the hell the Steyr SPPs appear in the movie? I watched the movie on Prime video this weekend and I never saw an SPP anywhere, though there are lots of scenes where terrorists are seen firing at the protagonists from a distance (or being shot and falling) where the guns could have been used.

S&Wshooter 09-05-2020 08:16 PM

The BDA guy sold basically everything he was trying to move, to one guy, so I snagged an IJ-70 today as consolation

S&Wshooter 03-05-2021 05:26 AM

Going to buy a Gold Cup tomorrow from a family friend, I have no idea what I'm going to do with it

MT2008 04-14-2021 06:46 PM

As an FYI: I'm setting up my Daniel Defense M4A1 as a "Sicario" clone build (since those movies got me interested in DD guns in the first place). I was able to source an FDE EOTech 553 and a Surefire M720V from two guys I met on ARFCOM; I replaced the Aimpoint PRO and Surefire M600DF with those. Right now, I'm just waiting on a Troy folding front sight to come in, and that last accessory will complete my build (the gun is currently fitted with a Troy folding rear sight, but a DD fixed front sight).

Once my build is complete, I'll link to the topic; I plan to post it on the DD forum on ARFCOM first.

http://www.imfdb.org/images/9/93/MyPT92s-1.jpg

Side note: Old-school (1980s/1990s-vintage) nickel Taurus PT-92s in decent condition are getting to be surprisingly expensive on Gunbroker. I paid nearly twice as much for my new PT92 AFS as I did for my blued PT92 AF (which I bought two years ago now).

Spartan198 07-10-2021 10:15 PM

TBH, I've never found the Beretta 92/PT92 to be all that aesthetically pleasing and was glad when John McClane switched to a SIG in Live Free or Die Hard.

This didn't actually go through, I bought a really slick S&W Model 19-5 off him though. Also he still had the damn BDA I wanted

I also got a WASR-10 and stuck black polymer furniture on it, naturally all the 7.62x39 goes away within 2 months of me getting it, same as what happened when I bought an AK74 years and years back

The Model 19 is one of my favorites. Like potato chips I couldn't stop with just one.

The squared trigger guards on most S&Ws are also noticeably smaller at the front (I've noticed it mostly on 3rd gens, my 645 is "normal") and it's definitely something that could be annoying for big/gloved fingers. I really like the hook on my 645, but the checkering on my 4506 and 5906 guards is very comfortable

I might get a LNIB SW40VE (yeah I know) I found for $200, I want something to stick up at my dad's place in his safe; my SKS-D is going when I am able to get up there next. I also just got a Fireforce Ventures Rhodesian rig off a friend, and a Chinese Type 84 rig for my new WASR

S&Wshooter 02-10-2022 02:03 AM

I totally did get that SW40VE, then a Bersa BP9cc, and just today a Beretta 84F. I just keep seeing good deals or stuff I really like going for a good price

MT2008 03-03-2022 04:08 AM

After many years, I'm finally getting a Steyr SPP (yes, a real one). I've wanted one for years because I regard it as an iconic Hollywood machine pistol, but lately, they've been a bit overpriced on Gunbroker. I finally found an FFL which had one that they were just trying to get rid of, and which also came with a decent number of mags. Anyone interested in some pics and/or a YouTube video comparing it with my screen-used rubber SPP from the movie "Stratton"? Outside of Hollywood's armorers, I might just be one of the only people on the gunternet who can produce such content.

Side note: I do hope to own a screen-used blank-adapted firearm someday.
