I think I stopped paying attention after hearing "John Ford's 'Tis Pity She's a Whore,'" which in that moment I pictured as John Wayne's weirdest film. (It turns out it's a different John Ford.)

And anytime you can use "Non Nobis, Domine" from 1989's Henry V, you do it.

funkychinaman 07-14-2014 01:22 AM

I think the biggest news in this story is that they're actually making a sequel to Homefront. I just got bored with the first one and stopped playing.

Nope, just being a dick

As I was explaining to a friend recently, the difference between shelling out money to see some mindless action like Pacific Rim and some mindless action like TF4 is that Guillermo del Toro, unlike Michael Bay, occasionally makes films that aren't mindless action, like Pan's Labyrinth.

http://uproxx.com/gammasquad/2014/07...-3-reddit-ama/

He also mentioned not being able to use blanks in Pan's Labyrinth. According to IMDB, the film was shot in Spain.

Did he just find out? BO2 has been out for almost two years now.

Okay, what's up with Asian dictators being butthurt about their portrayal on video games and movies?

Excalibur 07-16-2014 09:10 PM

Because dictators are dicks.

I'm surprised Kin Jong-il didn't throw a hissy fit over how he was portrayed in Team American: World Police.

funkychinaman 07-16-2014 09:50 PM

In many ways Western media is doing a much better job promoting North Korea than their propagandists. I don't think any North Korean seriously believes they can invade and conquer the United States, and yet Homefront and the new Red Dawn has them doing just that.

Excalibur 07-17-2014 05:10 PM

It's more of a funny idea than to be taken seriously. Also the guys who did the new Red Dawn and Homefront wanted it to be China but...I chuckle to see if the People's Republic can get pass the US Navy.

funkychinaman 07-17-2014 10:29 PM

New Captain America costume, and Hawkeye is dressed as... Legolas (5/9)?

North Korea asked the Czech Republic to ban the movie shortly after it came out, but they refused. That was about the only reaction it garnered from the NorKos.

Excalibur 07-19-2014 02:28 PM

So I just saw the demo footage of Homefront Revolution and it does look interesting. I can clearly see the work of the guys behind Farcry and Crysis. It does look promising and realistically, any direction is a step up from the first game.

Some of the things I like about it is savaging around for parts, the feel of open world and real time customizing of your weapon. You can actually see your character remove the scope and put on a different one.

I hope we get to see more weapons. I've only seen you wield an M4 type gun and a Beretta which I hope isn't the ONLY pistol like the last game.

It looks like they're taking inspiration from the Ronin costume (an identity that Hawkeye assumed for some time in the comics).

And I actually don't mind Wanda and Pietro's costumes (trust me, it could of been worse).

The Raid 2 is absolutely brutal, and I don't mean that in a bad way. It's a very hard R. They must've bought fake blood by the tanker. But if you can stand it and love action films, it's a must-see.

I saw it more than a month ago *smug hipster face*

I really think the chick with the strap on was really unnecessary in The Raid 2.

They definitely got the most out of that R rating.

Excalibur 07-22-2014 06:11 PM

I just saw Sabotage and it's pretty good.

I only saw Raid 2 because I was trying to go see Sabotage, didn't see it on the theater times thing, and noticed they were showing Raid 2 once a night

A lot of news in this one. Tremors reboot, a Company of Heroes sequel, a Jarhead sequel (?) and yet another Sniper film. According to IMDB, however, the next Sniper film does star Tom Berenger, so there's that.

For some reason, Jarhead pisses me off. Just like how Platoon pisses me off.

I've never seen Jarhead, but I heard the biggest gripe was that it's a war movie without a war.

Excalibur 07-24-2014 12:09 PM

Platoon bothered me with how they portrayed the troops or some of them as this no discipline bunch of murdering, raping assholes. Jarhead made more sense because the portrayal of Marines is pretty accurate.

That is what pissed me off about the movie.

Excalibur 07-24-2014 04:22 PM

So what's your problem with Jarhead?

My problem is that no actual fighting takes place! Not even something like an ambush. All Quiet On the Western Front is a freakin' action movie compared to Jarhead.

Excalibur 07-24-2014 07:58 PM

Well that was the point of the movie. It wasn't supposed to be an action movie. It's a story of a guy who joins the Marines and living through the mundane of barely anything happening. In a real war in the middle east, it is mostly 90% of boredom. Sure the 10% makes up for it with a lot of danger, but then goes back to dull nothing.

Well, I'll give it that. At least it wasn't as mind-numbingly boring as Gerry (NOTHING OF FUCKING SUBSTANCE HAPPENED IN THAT MOVIE!!! IT WAS JUSTT WO GUYS WALKING IN THE DESERT FOR 90 MINUTES!!!).

I tried read the book once. Here's my view of it reposted from SB:
Quote:

I tried to read the book Jarhead is based on. It's practically unreadable. The author never saw any combat, or did anything other than sit in the desert and clear an empty trench, so he just talks about all the sex he and his buddies have had, and all the sex stories he'd heard. I read the first chapter or two, skipped ahead to see in anything interesting happened, and took it back to the library.

If you never did anything interesting, don't try to write a book. I have no idea why it ever became a movie.

The Wierd It 07-26-2014 08:06 AM

What I took away from the whole thing based on the one time I saw the movie was that that was kind of the point; it was showing that unless you're in the right place at the right time war is boring as fuck.

S&Wshooter 07-27-2014 04:25 AM

I like it when war non-fiction includes the parts in which exciting stuff isn't happening, letting you see what it was like between action or out of the way of the action

http://img1.imagesbn.com/p/978089141...1_s260x420.JPG

This is really good about portraying the daily life, mentality, etc of the subjects and touched on that sort of thing most rather than focus mainly on combat. The books I've read about the Rhodesian Bush War are really good about it, too, with most of it being about EVERYTHING the person had to do and what they did in their downtime

First Mad Max trailer. It looks pretty crazy.

Here I thought the reason why Freddy Prinz Jr. wasn't on TV anymore was because he was Freddy Prinz Jr. But since when is being short being unprofessional?

If this is supposed to be a sequel, what's the V8 Interceptor doing there? As we recall, it was wrecked and blown up in MM2.

Sutherland is no doubt a great actor, but I've heard he can be difficult to work with.
