Handgun vs. Animals

I do a lot of hiking and I'm looking for something with a little more power that my S&W 3913 against 4 legged critters namely wolves, coyotes, black bears, whatever. Anyone have any recommendations?

Where I'm at I have to think about snakes, foxes, coyote and Dogs for the most part. Where I go camping and backpacking I have to worry about Bears and California magazine restrictions.

Currently my local Fred Meyers has a Ruger .44 magnum for $850. I'm lucky I have other bills to pay first.

You can get a Ruger GP-100 in .357 for probably $300-400.

A 10mm might be nice.

Yeah I was leaning towards the glock 20/29 10mm or some .44 mag revolver I've read that .357 magnum is ineffective towards bears.

I had heard that. 357 Magnum works well on black bears, but guess if you're in CA, you're probably talking something bigger.

I would think full retard to be an S&W 500 with a 10" barrel.
