Relation between the M14 and the Mini-14?

Is there one? This has been bugging me for a while now, since both rifles share a similar physical appearance and name. Was the Mini-14 designed as a "downsized" M14 in a smaller caliber or is it just a superficial similarity intended for marketing toward fans of the M14/M1A rifle?

The bolt assemblies/actions look pretty similar from the outside but I believe the Mini-14s is smaller overall so the parts aren't interchangeable.

The relation is in the looks only, the mini 14 actually is more related to a m1 carbine.

Bingo,

I have a copy of the M14 History and Development and the Mini14 is not mentioned in it as it's not a true M14 varient.

According to wikipedia:

Quote:

Mini-14 is derived from the military M14 rifle implying a miniature version of the M14. Ruger used the M14 as a model for the new rifle while incorporating numerous innovations and cost-saving engineering changes.

Isn't the wood furniture the same? With the folding stock variant it looks almost identical.

If not then i'd say the M2 automatic carbine was used.
