Prettiest and ugliest guns?

Practicality and performance aside for a moment, which modern(ish) firearms would you say have the most aesthetically pleasing design and which do you think are pretty damn ugly to look at?

As an illustrator, I've painted/drawn a variety of different weapons in my time am curious to know what you fine folks' thoughts are...

Jcordell 02-22-2011 12:01 AM

Well if we're talking modern(ish) designs than I am partial to the P08 Luger and the Mauser C/96 Broomhandle. I also like the Mk VI Webley revolver which is strangely appealing to my eyes much like the way an English bulldog is.

The GLOCK design is very practical, but it isn't a very handsome design. Form follows function I guess.

k9870 02-22-2011 12:16 AM

Luger=Pretty
Hi point=ugly

Nice 1911=pretty
Intratec Cat 9= ugly

mpe2010 02-22-2011 12:54 AM

for revolvers:
nagant revolver= ugly
Single Action Army= pretty

FirearmFan 02-22-2011 04:21 AM

Hi Point pistols and carbines are pretty ugly, but at least with the carbine you can dress is up to look like a Beretta CX4.

1911's are very pretty.
Stainless Colt SAA's are quite pretty too.

Yournamehere 02-22-2011 06:19 AM

I think almost everyone can agree that the Beretta 92 series is insanely beautiful, or at least that it has one of the most eyegrabbing forms imaginable with all of it's lines and cuts. The same can be said for the Hi-Power, which I refer to as "the 1911s hot cousin".
Yes, I own both of these, but still, they are both very outstanding guns in terms of aesthetics.

As far as ugly goes, one gun I can't warm up to is the Chiappa Rhino. It defies what revolvers have been for the last hundred years in terms of both function and aesthetics.

Yournamehere 02-22-2011 07:16 AM

Okay, as much as I hate to double post, my buddy and I brought up a very controversial "which is prettier" match up. Forget about manufacturer, forget about functionality, forget about cost, forget about everything that isn't aesthetics, just take a look at these two guns...

http://www.imfdb.org/images/d/da/Smi...n-Model-19.jpg

http://www.imfdb.org/images/4/4a/Colt-Python.jpg

and decide, which one is prettier?

I'd like to hear a more specific "why you think your choice is prettier" from S&Wshooter and k9870, since the former is gay for anything S&W, period, and the latter talks about how much they hate Colt all the time. This decision requires a complete surrendering of brand miopia, and you guys will need it.

Diego Wolfwood 02-22-2011 08:29 AM

I like S&W's but I will be quite honest and say I think the Python looks visually more appealing.

S&Wshooter 02-22-2011 12:08 PM

Python looks better. The Model 19 is far from ugly though

FIVETWOSEVEN 02-22-2011 04:00 PM

Definately the Python, those are really sweet and with my experiance, better than S&W Revolvers.

ersoz 02-22-2011 04:55 PM

There might be some other modern revolvers that should be taken into consideration.

I think we need a "poll".

Which is why Colt's decision to stop producing them was painfully stupid

k9870 02-22-2011 05:37 PM

I kinda like colt revovlers. Its the company i hate. The python has a better finish and grips, but im not a fan of vent ribs on revolvers. Colt/Dan Wesson shouldnt have done vent ribs. Colts have a slick action, but the cylinder release is dumb, the pull back style, they shouldve done a SW style release, instead of trying to re invent the wheel a la H&K.

The ruger Redhawk is very nice looking. Most other rugers just look like workhorses, not really pretty.

Don't mean to troll but I actually find that gun kind of ugly.

I think the recent GP-100s are rather eye catching.

k9870 02-22-2011 06:30 PM

Old gp100s with wood insert grips were good looking.

funkychinaman 02-22-2011 06:32 PM

I totally agree with the GP100. (I'm not partial though.) And the old grips were beautiful. When I first saw them, I couldn't believe they were factory grips.

funkychinaman 02-22-2011 06:33 PM

So I've said I like the look of the GP100. On the flip side, I think Schofields are ugly.

ersoz 02-22-2011 06:46 PM

Why don't we start a 10 option poll? For modern revolvers produced from 1960 to present.
Let's nominate revolvers.

Have there BEEN ten revolver designs from 1960 onwards? Why not move it to 1900?

k9870 02-22-2011 07:02 PM

Why just revovlers?

No ofcourse not. That is the reason for nominations. And why 10? Vbulletin allows for polls with up to 10 options unfortunately.

Think of it like the oscars. Dozens of award worthy movies made each year but only a few are nominated.

Also, I was thinking the last 50 years. Hence the reason for that timeframe.

Why just revolvers?
Revolvers and semi auto /auto pistols are just different categories. I think, depending on participation, we could organize different polls for different category firearms. Such as pocket pistols, automatic pistols, large caliber, small caliber, SMG's etc.
Would a moderator care to organize the polls?

ersoz 02-22-2011 07:23 PM

Just to see how many members would be interested, I wii start a poll. Coolest movie rifles. :) This might be fun.

That's fine, everyone has their taste, though I will tell you it's something you have to experience firsthand to really appreciate.

Oddly enough I find the GP100 kind of ugly myself, but between the Python and the Model 19, I think the Model 19 is the better looking gun. The Python's lines are all very clean cut and parallel for the most part, and I don't find that as interesting as the more drastic ones on the 19. That makes it more interesting/visually appealing to me. I'll tell you right now though that if you're an artist, you'll have a much easier time trying to draw a Python well than a Model 19 just because of that fact, and for artists, that makes it a more interesting gun too.

Yournamehere 02-22-2011 10:40 PM

Also, there have been far more that 10 revolver designs since the 1960s if you're willing to get into detail, or split hairs even, and I guess they all jumped on the revolver bandwagon since I posted my match up. I don't think a poll is a good idea, but I do think you guys should come up with match ups of your own, but make them fair, of course. Same type of gun, same era, something like that. Now that would make for an interesting thread.

BeardedHoplite 02-23-2011 01:24 AM

I like the look of a nickel 1911 with black grips. But if we're looking at revolvers, I like the SP101 and the S&W Model 10

funkychinaman 02-23-2011 01:26 AM

As for autos, I've long held that the unsung star of Letters from Iwo Jima was the General's M1911. That thing was gorgeous.

k9870 02-23-2011 01:27 AM

I think some CZ75 models, like the polished stainless, are very pretty.

mjp28 02-23-2011 03:03 AM

Prettiest cars, women, firearms all somewhat in the eye of the beholder. I like the classic big ol' guns but always thought derringers were kind of ...."sexy"?

Like in a movie, card game, derringer.

S&Wshooter 02-23-2011 05:08 PM

Pretty: FN FAL

Ugly: SIG SG 510

k9870 02-23-2011 05:21 PM

It's pretty to me. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, you know

k9870 02-23-2011 05:45 PM

Yeah, I think there are ore categories than pretty and ugly though, and theres a middle ground. Theres guns that look goofy, weird, cool, badass, all-business, etc.

Markost 02-23-2011 07:47 PM

Pretty: MG3
Ugly: AA-52

k9870 02-23-2011 07:50 PM

Yournamehere 02-24-2011 10:27 PM

I've seen that one before, and I think mine is prettier, even with it's condition.
