Brief: In 2005, the ARA Drummond intercepted a taiwanese fishing boat in the Argentine Sea, sinking it and arresting its crew. Nice way to protect the squid and other natural resources in the area.

Totally worth it to endanger the lives of human beings to save those precious squid. One planet one chance amirite guys?

Edit: Also that fuel is going to leak out if it didn't burst all over the place already and crap up the whole area for a bit. I'm sure the squid will appreciate that.

Now if only Paul Watson had the guts to do this.

Wouldn't it have made more sense to just board the ship, arrest the crew, and sail the ship back to port?

I'm all for defending your sovereign waters (which is becomming a big deal for us in the Artic), but that seems a little excessive.

Looks like the Drummond didn´t sunk the vessel, its own crew did it to destroy all the evidence.

It´s never excessive when you have tons of foreign vessels fishing and destroying all the fish reserves (in a minimal level now). Just look at the killmarks:

Not all the vessels are sunk, most of them are confiscated with all its cargo and sold as junk, or modified and commissioned to the Coast Guard. Or they end as Exocet´s food for training.

At first I thought it was another Chinese ship that's violating another country's waters again, but Taiwan is close enough.

I didn't think ships caught on fire when they were scuttled, at least not civilian ones. And scuttling a ship seems to be a really excessive means to destroy evidence of illegal fishing. How much jail time and how much in fines can we be talking about here? It's not like they'd get any insurance money out of it either.

For this kind of incidents, the company must pay the fine for all the crew. If you don´t find any evidence, you can´t arrest them. Burning the vessel is cheaper than paying the fine, you´re going to lost all the cargo and the ship anyway.

Did anyone other than me laugh at this? It just seems so absurd, almost like something out of The Onion (remember that fake article about animal rights commandos who "liberated" animals from a testing lab?) Except...it's not.

k9870 01-22-2011 08:10 PM

Ah well I doubt many people will fish illegally after this....
